(AP) ? It seems almost impossible to imagine the Ravens without Ray Lewis, who has anchored Baltimore's renowned defense ever since the team came into existence.

For 17 years, Lewis has been stalking opposing quarterbacks and running backs. He inspired his teammates with emotional speeches, proudly donned his No. 52 jersey on Sunday afternoons and did everything in his power to help Baltimore win.

Soon, all that will only be a memory. In a stunning announcement Wednesday, the two-time AP Defensive Player of the Year said he will retire after the Ravens complete their 2013 playoff run.

"It caught me by surprise, because we all thought the great Ray Lewis was going to play forever," Baltimore outside linebacker Terrell Suggs said. "I thought he was going to surpass Brett Favre and still be out there doing it well into his 40s. He let us know that the sun is setting on his career. It's amazing and it's sad, all at the same time."

When Lewis gathered his teammates together Wednesday morning, no one had a clue what he was about to tell them.

"Everything that starts has an end," the 37-year-old Lewis said. "For me, today, I told my team that this will be my last ride."

The reaction was stunned silence.

"I thought we were getting our 'Let's go on a run in the playoffs' speech,'" Suggs said. "Not that."

Lewis has been sidelined since Oct. 14 with a torn right triceps. He intends to return Sunday to face the Indianapolis Colts in what will almost certainly be his final home game.

And when he does his trademark dance after emerging from the tunnel, Lewis will receive an ovation 17 years in the making.

"That moment I walk out of that tunnel Sunday, every person that was a Ravens fan ? 1996 to this day ? we will all enjoy that moment," he said. "It will probably be one of the glorious moments in my life."

Lewis is poised to walk away from the game because he wants to spend more time with his sons. While working to return from his injury, Lewis watched two of his boys play on the same high school football team in Florida. He intends to see Ray Lewis III perform as a freshman next year for the University of Miami, where Lewis starred before the Ravens selected him in the first round of the 1996 draft.

"God is calling," Lewis said. "My children have made the ultimate sacrifice for their father for 17 years. I don't want to see them do that no more. I've done what I wanted to do in this business, and now it's my turn to give them something back."

That's why Lewis will pull off his uniform for the last time after the Ravens lose or claim their second Super Bowl title.

"It's either (that or) hold onto the game and keep playing and let my kids miss out on times we can be spending together," Lewis said. "Because I always promised my son if he got a full ride on scholarship Daddy is going to be there, I can't miss that."

Lewis was the AP Defensive Player of the Year in 2000, the same season he was voted Super Bowl MVP following Baltimore's 34-7 rout of the New York Giants. Lewis was also Defensive Player of the Year in 2003, and is the only player in NFL history with at least 40 career sacks and 30 interceptions.

"I never played the game for individual stats," Lewis said. "I only played the game to make my team a better team."

After the Ravens moved from Cleveland, Lewis was drafted 26th overall in Baltimore's first draft. He became a fixture at middle linebacker and a beloved figure in Baltimore, and remained that way even after his alleged involvement in a double-murder in Atlanta in early 2000.

In June of that year, a judge approved a deal allowing Lewis to avoid murder charges and jail time by pleading guilty to a misdemeanor and testifying against two co-defendants. Within a year, Lewis was in the Super Bowl, leading the Ravens to their only NFL championship.

Hundreds of games later, he's ready to call it a career.

"I'll make this last run with this team, and I'll give them everything I've got," he said. "When it ends, it ends. But I didn't come back for it to end in the first round."

The news of his decision to retire quickly resounded throughout the NFL.

Colts coach Chuck Pagano, who served as Lewis' defensive coordinator last year, said, "I thought, shoot, the guy could play forever and would play forever. Great person, great man, great player, just an unbelievable human being ? what he's done for that organization, that city and for that matter, so many people. He's obviously a first-ballot Hall of Famer and will be sorely missed."

Marvin Lewis, now Cincinnati's head coach and Lewis' first defensive coordinator in 1996, said, "He's had a tremendous career, tremendous impact. His mentorship to other players, his leadership is hard to describe."

The two men met last Sunday before Baltimore's game against the Bengals. Marvin Lewis recalled, "I said to myself, 'He doesn't look a day older than when we drafted him.'"

Lewis was respected by his peers, too, even those who were on the receiving end of his crushing tackles.

Green Bay defensive standout Clay Matthews said, "I know guys around the league ? offense, defense, special teams ? look up to him because of how he goes about his business and the influential role he has not only for his team but around the league."

Lewis is the key figure in a defense that has long carried a reputation for being fierce, unyielding and downright nasty. He led the Ravens in tackles in 14 of his 17 seasons, the exceptions being those years in which he missed significant time with injuries (2002, 2005, 2012).

When Lewis tore his triceps against Dallas, it was feared he was done for the season. But he would have none of that.

"From the time I got hurt, everything I've done up to this point has been to get back with my team to make another run at the Lombardi (Trophy)," he said.

Well, not everything. Lewis spent time watching his boys play football, which caused him to call his rehabilitation "bittersweet." After spending countless hours from Monday through Thursday working to return from the injury, he hopped on a plane toward Florida to be with his boys.

"I got to be there every Friday," Lewis said. "Me being who I am, not having a father myself, that damaged me a lot. I didn't want my kids to relive that.

"One of the hardest things in the world is to walk away from my teammates. But the now I'm going to step into other chapters of my life.

"I knew I couldn't split my time anymore. When God calls, he calls. And he's calling. More importantly, he calls me to be a father. It's OK to be Daddy. Yes, this chapter is closing, but the chapter that's opening is overwhelming. That's what excites me the most."

Lewis could have made the announcement during the offseason.

"I think my fans, my city, I think they deserved for me to just not walk away," he said. "We all get to enjoy what Sunday will feel like, knowing that this will be the last time 52 plays in a uniform in Ravens stadium."

(AP) ? Bobby Womack has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member told the BBC in a recent interview the diagnosis comes after he began having difficulty remembering his songs and the names of people he's worked with.

A spokeswoman did not immediately reply to a message left by the Associated Press.

The soul singer has cut a wide path through the music business as a performer and songwriter in his 50-year career and recently launched another act with "The Bravest Man in the Universe," the Damon Albarn-produced comeback album that recently made several best-of lists.

Elvis play generates controversy at Utah high school

SALT LAKE CITY (Reuters) - Elvis Presley, whose gyrating hips caused an uproar in the 1950s, has become the center of a controversy at a Utah high school where a parent complaint prompted officials to revise a musical featuring the music of the late "king of rock 'n' roll."

The Jordan School District in a Salt Lake City suburb said on Thursday the reworked production of "All Shook Up" at Herriman High School allowed it to avoid canceling the show, as it had announced on Wednesday it was doing.

A parent complained about a song in the play, which appeared on Broadway in 2005, and about scenes the parent contended were too sexually suggestive, said Steven Dunham, a spokesman for the school district. Dunham said he did not know the name of the song in question.

School officials first thought the copyright on the musical, by playwright Joe DiPietro, would prevent them from making changes, which is why they canceled it, Dunham said. School officials have since worked it out with the publisher of the musical.

"They agreed to allow us to make the changes necessary to meet community standards," he said. "We said, 'Great, this is what we wanted all along.'"

A cross-dressing element in the musical will remain in the production to be staged next month at Herriman High School, which is about 20 miles south of Salt Lake City.

"All Shook Up" features the music of Presley and a story based on William Shakespeare's play "Twelfth Night."

Presley, who died in 1977 after a career as one of America's biggest music stars, was a controversial figure when he first appeared on national television in 1956 and upset critics with the wild gyrations of his hips.

He earned the nickname "Elvis the pelvis" by exciting young fans and raising eyebrows among their parents with his suggestive dance moves.

Gerard Depardieu's latest drama: a Russian passport

Vladimir Putin flourished his pen Thursday morning and signed what must be the oddest decree of his long years in power: an order granting a Russian passport to French actor and tax exile Gerard Depardieu.

A terse announcement posted on the Kremlin website noted that Mr. Putin acted "to satisfy an application for citizenship of the Russian Federation by Gerard Xavier Depardieu, who was born in 1948 in France."

Mr. Depardieu, star of over 170 films and possessing what is often politely referred to as a "colorful" public personality, has been locked in a high profile battle with France's new socialist government over an emergency tax that would levy a 75 percent rate on people earning more than $1.3 million. He recently renounced his French citizenship and took up residence in Belgium, which offers a friendlier tax regime for the super-rich.

Recommended: Vladimir Putin 101: A quiz about Russia's president

France's high court struck down the law last week as "unconstitutional," but the government announced it will soon reintroduce the measure after taking the court's concerns into account.

It's not clear whether Depardieu actually applied for residence in Russia, which has a 13 percent flat income tax for all, but in a far-ranging press conference last month Putin declared "If G?rard really wants to have a residence permit or a Russian passport, you can consider it done, the issue solved positively."

Putin also said that he has long enjoyed "kind, friendly, personal relations" with the French actor.

COME TO CHECHNYA

Depardieu is no stranger to Russia. He has appeared in several ad campaigns and filmed the 2011 movie Rasputin in St. Petersburg. He is also rumored to be close to Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov, and was guest of honor at the pro-Kremlin leader's birthday party in Grozny last October.

Mr. Kadyrov has said that he would happily invite Depardieu to come and live permanently in Chechnya if he wanted to. "If the country's leadership decides in favor of granting Depardieu Russian citizenship, we will be glad to create deserved conditions for the great cultural figure in our republic," Kadyrov said last week.

Russia's blogosphere erupted in derision and sarcastic comment Thursday, with some people writing painfully of their own troubles with Russia's notoriously bureaucratic passport department.

One man posted on Facebook his own tale of trying for years to repatriate his own Russian-born elderly mother from next-door Belarus, but he has so far failed to move Russian authorities because her Belarussian documents show a slightly different spelling of her name than appears on her Russian birth certificate.

PART OF SPAT WITH WEST?

Sergei Strokan, a foreign affairs columnist with the liberal Moscow daily Kommersant, says the granting of citizenship to Depardieu should be seen in context with the escalating war of words between Russia and the West. Last month President Barack Obama signed the Magnitsky Act, which aims to punish corrupt Russian officials, and Moscow responded by enacting the Dima Yakovlev Act, whose main feature is a ban on US citizens adopting Russian orphans.

"Russia is very much on the defensive right now. The vindictive nature of Russia's adoption ban has shocked not only the US, but also many in Europe and here in Russia as well," Mr. Strokan says.

"We seem to be entering into a cold war-like battle of images, in which Russia is trying to show that it offers a better life, has higher ideals, and is more friendly to humanity than the West.... So this may be seen as a calculated PR move, an effort to demonstrate that we understand and care for the beloved French actor more than his own homeland does," he adds.

"I can't imagine that Depardieu would actually want to live here and experience the life of Russians, though. Let's see how it goes the first time he attempts to travel with that new Russian passport."

It?s Better To Be Raised by a Single Mom

A few months ago, social scientist W. Bradford Wilcox insisted in Slate that it?s worse to be raised by a single mother even if you?re not poor. Children of single mothers, he argued, are more likely to end up as pregnant teens, or in jail, or otherwise in trouble. For centuries Wilcox?s has been the common view. But in an age when single motherhood is becoming more common, these mothers (and social science research) are starting to challenge that view. In fact, some believe that in an era when children are coddled and dependent for way too long, being a child of a single parent has distinct advantages.

Readers, we invite you to submit your testimonies on why being raised by a single mother, or being a single mother, has its benefits and might even be better than having both parents around. Send your essays to doublex.slate@gmail.com and write ?single mother? in the subject line. We will choose the best ones and run them on the blog. We?d love to hear from single dads and boys raised by single mothers, too.

If the forms ask, I check off the box that says ?head of the household.? Gender: female. Eyes: brown. Occupation: queen. Queen of the castle. If there were a moat, it would be my moat. I would orchestrate all activities in the moat. Canoe races, water aerobics, turtle hunting, you know. This year marks the 10th that I have held such an esteemed domestic status. One decade. My first milestone.

When couples celebrate their 10th anniversary, they might buy important jewelry and give it to each other to wear. Sometimes they surprise each other and hide the jewels under napkins or in soup bowls. That?s because a decade is a long time, a long time to share towels and make compromises and most often raise kids. In marital circles, it is an accomplishment. In unmarital circles, OK, in my unmarital circle, a decade of parenting?alone, without the relationship part?is not an accomplishment. It is a Sisyphean feat. It is like jogging to Uzbekistan. Or deciphering the human genome. I am going to buy a ruby and bake it into a cake and forget that I did it and give it to myself. Surprise! Happy anniversary!

Ten years ago, I was not as ebullient, fearing the logistics, mainly, of my new arrangement?making house payments, changing filters in the attic, getting to soccer practices and ballet without splitting my body in half surgically. The apprehension was warranted; the details have been hard. I worried less, though, that my two daughters, now teenagers, would grow up as well as they would have had a proper father lived in their house. Now, I see that they have grown up with so much more. More than, I daresay, their peers from two-parent families have. Hence, the ruby in the cake.

Kids of unmarried parents, according to all of those studies (of rich moms and poor, educated moms and not-so), are supposed to be failures. They are supposed to abuse drugs, get pregnant, and end up in prison rather than grad school. One-fourth of them are supposed to experience the kind of emotional havoc that renders them useless forever. There is of course no data suggesting that these particular kids might have had similar paths regardless of the number of adults sleeping down the hall. But beyond that there is also the beauty that emerges from the strain, the impediments, even the sometimes terrifying knowledge that their parents might fail them. No single mom wants to fail them?provide less, teach less, support less, be less?but it is in our minds that we might. So we struggle, and over the long term, we impart to our children that struggle can be good. This is something they know intimately.

First, the easy lessons: money. Work hard for it. Save it. Choose what to spend it on. My kids have seen me write for a living at home, tutor, teach classes, and sew purses at the kitchen table so that I could be available to them after school. They know that I could earn more as a ?regular? employee, but they?ve figured out how to assess the value of each option and of other things. They never ask for anything that costs a lot. They thank me for making dinner each night. When they were in elementary school, they put $124.58 in an envelope and gave it to me. It was everything that they had saved. I took one of the dollars and wrote on it: ?This is my birthday present from my wonderful daughters who are selfless and sincere and my very special comrades.? I gave the rest back to them and told them not to ever worry. The bill is in a frame on a bookshelf by my desk.

Nanoparticles reach new peaks: Researchers show short laser pulses selectively heat gold nanoparticles

Jan. 3, 2013 ? Plasmonic gold nanoparticles make pinpoint heating on demand possible. Now Rice University researchers have found a way to selectively heat diverse nanoparticles that could advance their use in medicine and industry.

Rice scientists led by Dmitri Lapotko and Ekaterina Lukianova-Hleb showed common gold nanoparticles, known since the 19th century as gold colloids, heat up at near-infrared wavelengths as narrow as a few nanometers when hit by very short pulses of laser light. The surprising effect reported in Advanced Materials appears to be related to nonstationary optical excitation of plasmonic nanoparticles. Plasmons are free electrons on the surface of metals that become excited by the input of energy, typically from light. Moving plasmons can transform optical energy into heat.

"The key idea with gold nanoparticles and plasmonics in general is to convert energy," Lapotko said. "There are two aspects to this: One is how efficiently you can convert energy, and here gold nanoparticles are world champions. Their optical absorbance is about a million times higher than any other molecules in nature.

"The second aspect is how precisely one can use laser radiation to make this photothermal conversion happen," he said. Particles traditionally respond to wide spectra of light, and not much of it is in the valuable near-infrared region. Near-infrared light is invisible to water and, more critically for biological applications, to tissue.

"This was the problem," Lapotko said. "All nanoparticles, beginning with solid gold colloids and moving to more sophisticated, engineered gold nanoshells, nanorods, cages and stars, have very wide spectra, typically about 100 nanometers, which means we were allowed to use only one type of nanoparticle at a time. If we tried to use different types, their spectra overlapped and we did not benefit from the high tunability of lasers."

The discovery allows controlled laser pulses to tune the absorbance spectrum of plain gold colloids, Lapotko said. "This novel approach is counter to the established paradigm that assumes optical properties of nanoparticles are pre-set during their fabrication and stay constant during their optical excitation," he said.

The Rice lab showed basic colloidal gold nanoparticles could be efficiently activated by a short laser pulse at 780 nanometers, with an 88-fold amplification of the photothermal effect seen with a continuous laser. The researchers repeated their experiment with nanoparticle clusters in water, in living cancer cells and in animals, with the same or better results: they showed spectral peaks two nanometers wide. Such narrow photothermal spectra had never been seen for metal nanoparticles, either singularly or in clusters.

The effect appears to depend on vapor nanobubbles that form when the particles heat liquid in their immediate environment. The nanobubbles grow and burst in an instant. "Instead of using the nanoparticle as a heat sink with a continuous, stationary laser, we're creating a transient, nonstationary situation in which the particle interacts with the incident laser in a totally different way," Lapotko said. He said the effect is repeatable and works with laser pulses shorter than 100 picoseconds.

Even better, an experiment with mixed nanorods and nanoshells found they responded to laser pulses with strong, distinct signals at wavelengths 10 nanometers apart. That means two or more types of nanoparticles in the same location can be selectively activated on demand.

"The nanoparticles we used were nothing fancy; they were used in the 19th century by Michael Faraday, and it was believed they could do nothing in the near-infrared," he said. "That was the major motivation for people to invent nanorods, nanoshells and the other shapes. Here, we prove these inexpensive particles can behave quite well in near-infrared." He said the discovery opens the possibility that many metal nanoparticles could be used in biomedical and industrial applications where spectral selectivity and tuning would provide "unprecedented" precision.

"This is still more a phenomenon rather than a firmly established mechanism, with a nice theoretical basis," Lapotko said. "But when fully clarified, it could become a universal tool."

Co-authors of the paper are Alexey Volkov, a research scientist at the University of Virginia, and Xiangwei Wu, an associate professor in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Lapotko is a faculty fellow in biochemistry and cell biology, and Lukianova-Hleb is a research scientist at Rice.

The National Institutes of Health supported the research.

(AP) ? Markets breathed a huge sigh of relief Wednesday after U.S. lawmakers reached a budget agreement that will stop hundreds of billions of dollars in automatic tax increases and spending cuts that risked plunging the world's biggest economy into recession.

Stocks around the world started 2013 with hefty gains as investors welcomed the vote in the House of Representatives that made sure the U.S. does not go over the so-called "fiscal cliff." Though longer-term fiscal problems remain and President Barack Obama will likely face more battles with the Republican-dominated House, investors were relieved that the biggest near-term stumbling block to the world economy has been cleared.

"The degree to which the U.S. fiscal cliff was causing investors to repress risk appetite is all too clear on the first trading day of 2013," said Andrew Wilkinson, chief economic strategist at Miller Tabak & Co.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average spiked around 250 points, or 1.9 percent, to 13,349, while the broader S&P 500 index rose 1.9 percent too to 1,453.

In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares closed up 2.2 percent to 6,027.37, its first foray above the 6,000 mark since July 2011. The CAC-40 in France rose 2.6 percent to 3,733.93 while Germany's DAX ended 2.2 percent higher at 7,778.68.

Earlier, in Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index shot up 2.9 percent to close at 23,311.89, its highest finish since June 1, 2011. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 surged 1.2 percent to close at 4,705.90, its best finish in 19 months while South Korea's Kospi jumped 1.7 percent to 2,031.10. Japanese and Chinese markets were closed for public holidays.

The bill that Congress approved calls for higher taxes on income over $400,000 for individuals and $450,000 for couples, a victory for Obama. Earnings above those amounts would be taxed at a rate of 39.6 percent, up from the current 35 percent. It also delays for two months $109 billion worth of across-the-board spending cuts that had been set to start affecting the Pentagon and domestic agencies this week.

If lawmakers had not agreed by the Jan. 1, 2013 deadline on the new budget measures, more than $500 billion in tax increases would have hit the economy in 2013 alone. Government spending worth $109 billion would have been cut from the military and domestic spending programs.

Though fears over an imminent fall off the "fiscal cliff" have eased, investors still have a host of issues to worry about. The next possible point of contention will be in two months' time, when U.S. politicians will debate the debt ceiling and spending cuts that did not make it into the latest deal.

"No agreement would mean a technical default on U.S. debt in March," said Michael Ingram, market analyst at BGC Brokers. "The U.S. bond market would go into cardiac arrest."

Investors will also keep a close watch on any response from the credit rating agencies. After a fight in Congress to raise the debt limit in 2011, Standard & Poor's lowered the U.S. government's AAA bond rating, citing the lack of a credible plan to reduce the federal government's debt. It also voiced its concerns about the "effectiveness, stability and predictability of American policymaking."

Meanwhile, investors will be monitoring the state of the global economic recovery and Europe's ongoing battle to contain its 3-year debt crisis.

A better than expected monthly U.S. manufacturing survey from the Institute for Supply Management reinforced the underlying optimism in the markets, especially as investors shift their focus to Friday's payrolls report for December.

The ISM's index of manufacturing activity rose to 50.7 in December from 49.5 in the previous month. The rise was slightly more than expected in the markets and took the measure above the 50 threshold that indicates expansion.

"Nothing to dent the positive risk start to the year here," said Alan Ruskin, an analyst at Deutsche Bank.

While the evidence points to continued economic growth in the U.S., figures elsewhere highlighted the scale of the downturn in the economy of the 17 European Union countries that use the euro.

The manufacturing purchasing managers' index ? a gauge of business activity published by data provider Markit ? showed the eurozone's industrial sector remained mired in recession in December. The index fell to 46.1 from 46.3 the previous month. Anything below 50 indicates a contraction in activity.

How the European economy fares over the coming months will likely hinge on developments in the debt crisis. In the last few months of 2012, tensions eased largely in the wake of the announcement of a new bond-buying plan from the European Central Bank.

That has shored up the euro, which on Wednesday was down 0.1 percent at $1.3192, having earlier traded as much as 0.5 percent higher on the day.

Oil prices pushed higher, with the benchmark New York contract up $1.26 at $92.96 a barrel.

Angola: Stampede kills 13 at religious gathering

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? The death toll in a stampede on New Year's Eve at a sports stadium in Angola has risen to 13, and some of the victims were children, Angolan media reported Wednesday.

Officials said about 120 people were also injured in the incident, which happened when tens of thousands of people tried to enter a stadium in the capital, Luanda, for a religious gathering, according to Angop, the Angolan news agency.

Faustino Sebastiao, spokesman for the national firefighters department, said those who died were crushed and asphyxiated.

The event in the southern African nation was organized by the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, an evangelical group founded in Brazil.

In western Africa, a crowd in Ivory Coast stampeded after leaving a New Year's fireworks show early Tuesday, killing at least 60 people and injuring more than 200.

'Fiscal cliff' deal sends markets shooting higher

NEW YORK (AP) ? The "fiscal cliff" compromise, for all its chaos and controversy, was enough to send the stock market shooting higher Wednesday, the first trading day of the new year.

All the major U.S. stock indexes swelled by at least 2 percent. For the Dow Jones industrial average, up 263 points soon after the market opened, it was the biggest surge in six months.

Stocks around the world also leapt higher. The major indexes in Britain, France and Germany rose more than 2 percent, and Greece and Spain were up by more than 3 percent. Stocks in Asia also surged.

In the U.S., the rally was extraordinarily broad. For every stock that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, roughly 18 rose.

The Dow was up 263 at 13,369 after the first 45 minutes of trading. The S&P 500 was up 30 to 1,456. The Nasdaq composite was up 82 to 3,102.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose sharply, to 1.84 percent from 1.75 percent, as investors dumped safe harbor investments like U.S. government bonds and plowed money into stocks. The dollar fell against the euro and prices for oil and other commodities rose.

Late Tuesday night the U.S. House of Representatives passed a budget bill meant to ward off the "fiscal cliff." Many House Republicans balked at voting for the bill because they wanted a deal that did more to cut government spending.

Because lawmakers didn't have a budget compromise in place when the new year started on Tuesday, the U.S. technically did go over the "fiscal cliff," meaning tax increases and government spending cuts automatically kicked in that day. Some analysts worried that the combination would kick the U.S. back into recession. But the bill passed Tuesday night by the House will prevent the "cliff" from taking hold. It already has Senate approval, and now awaits a signature from President Barack Obama.

Some investors, even as they watched the stock market leap higher, cautioned that the euphoria could be short-lived. The deal leaves a host of questions unresolved. Notably, the core issue of the "fiscal cliff" standoff in Washington has been the country's long-term plan for trimming its debt, and the deal doesn't include any significant deficit-cutting agreement.

Next up is what could turn into a vicious fight over the debt ceiling, or how much the government is allowed to borrow. And the U.S. could still get its debt rating downgraded by one of the ratings agencies. The stock market plunged in August 2011 after Standard & Poor's cut the U.S. government's credit rating.

Some investors also noted that the "fiscal cliff," which has dominated headlines for weeks, is only masking serious problems punctuating the world economy, including the still-unsolved European debt crisis and middling growth for the U.S. economy. Wednesday, the president of debt-wracked Cyprus said he'd refuse to sell government-owned companies, a provision that the country's bailout deal says it must at least consider.

Among stocks making big moves, Zipcar shot up 48 percent, or $3.96, to $12.20 after the company said it had agreed to be acquired by Avis. Avis rose $1.16 to $20.98. Zipcar has a business model that's popular with drivers, allowing them to rent cars for just a few hours at a time. The company has struggled to win over investors, however, and its stock plunged nearly 39 percent in 2012. Avis rose 84 percent in the same period.

Distracted drivers take their eyes off the road every nine ... - Car loans

The only distractions that would have caught drivers? attention in times gone by would have been the occasional wayward deer or the kind of devilish smog that brought the capital to a standstill for a four-day stretch back in 1952.

Now the advent of new technology has meant that motorists? ability to keep their eyes on the road is being challenged by a constant onslaught of visual and auditory information from their host of in-car gadgets.

From radios to sat nav distractions, drivers are only able to hold out a paltry nine seconds before their eyes are averted from the task at hand.

A new study commissioned by insurer Direct Line, which utilises the latest eye-tracking technology to record drivers? eye movements, found that drivers spend 18% on their time behind the wheel focusing on anything but the road.

The research revealed that drivers? eyes are fixed on sat nav displays for 12% of their total journey time, six times longer than the time they spend watching oncoming traffic.

The average driver spends just 3.2% of the total journey time checking their mirrors, while clouds and scenery capture a staggering 7% of drivers? attention on the road.

Just 2% of drivers? time is spent looking at oncoming vehicles, while 0.6% in spent looking at road signs. Not only that, but just 3% of drivers? time is spent watching pedestrians.

?For the first time we know exactly where people focus their eyes when driving and the results are frightening,? said Simon Henrick, spokesperson for Direct Line.

?Even when drivers appear to be watching the road, by tracking movements in the cornea we now know they are often watching clouds or shop window displays.?

Stonehenge, Wiltshire emerged as the landmark most likely to capture drivers? imaginations as they put rubber to the road, with more drivers involved in accidents passing the site than at any other British landmark.

The recent research, from MORE TH>N, also placed the Angel of the North in second place with Blackpool Tower in third.

Afghan negotiator welcomes prisoner release

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A top Afghan negotiator said Tuesday he hopes eight Taliban members freed by Pakistan will serve as peace mediators, describing Islamabad's move as a major step forward for Kabul's effort to enlist its neighbor's help in negotiating an end to its 11-year war.

The eight released Monday include the Taliban's justice minister when the militants ruled Afghanistan before their 2001 overthrow, as well as a onetime guard of Taliban leader Mullah Omar. It was the second group of prisoners released by Pakistan.

Although both sides describe the deal as a step toward peace, much about the release remains unclear. Kabul has lobbied hard for Pakistan to release some Taliban prisoners as a step toward talks, but simultaneously presses Islamabad to crack down on militants using its territory. It has not said what, if anything, this particular group might bring to the table.

Islamabad for its part has never said why it arrested the eight in the first place. Neither side has said where this batch of freed prisoners and a previous group of 18 released in November have gone, nor what they will be doing. Another 100 prisoners are believed to remain in Pakistani custody.

In Kabul, the spokesman for President Hamid Karzai said the Afghan leader would discuss the peace negotiations with U.S. President Barack Obama. Karzai departs for Washington early next week.

Karzai will also bring up the ongoing handover of security from NATO to Afghan forces, training and equipment the forces and the shape of a U.S.-Afghan agreement after Washington withdraws most of its troops, spokesman Aimal Faizi told a news conference. NATO plans to hand security responsibility over to Afghan forces by the end of 2014.

The spokesman welcomed the prisoner release, but gave no details.

Ismail Qasemyar, a senior member of the Afghan High Peace Council, called their freeing a positive step in the peace process and hoped more releases would follow. It was not known whether the eight actually favored negotiations, but Qasemyar said it was hoped they would act as intermediaries between the Taliban leadership and the Kabul government.

"This is a big victory from our trip to Pakistan for peace negotiations. This is a good, practical step toward peace from Pakistan," said Qasemyar, the council's international affairs adviser and a key member of a delegation that travelled to Pakistan in November.

Pakistan is seen as key in ending the conflict. Kabul hopes the Taliban can be brought to the negotiating table before the 2014 foreign troop withdrawal.

But Pakistan's role is mixed. While Pakistan has arrested Afghan Taliban members, usually under pressure from Washington, its powerful military intelligence service has also afforded sanctuary and support for the militants.

Recently, Pakistan appears to have an interest in promoting a negotiated solution to the war across the border, as a post-2014 upheaval could bring harsh consequences, including another surge of refugees into the country.

Pakistan has longstanding ties to the Taliban, in part for geopolitical reasons. It fears that not having some control of who is or might one day be in power in Afghanistan could leave a vacuum which its arch-enemy, India, could fill.

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said the eight detainees were released to aid the peace process and included ex-Justice Minister Nooruddin Turabi and guard Mohammad Azeem. It was not known what role they might play in bringing the Taliban leaders to the negotiating table, what links they have to the group's current leadership or their stance on negotiations.

During Taliban rule, the one-legged, one-eyed Turabi was considered among the hard-liners in the regime, charged with dispensing harsh justice for even minor offenses against the group's draconian policies.

Today, Taliban leaders are believed to be split on the question of talks, with some favoring negotiations and others opting for continuing the war.

Waheed Mazhda, a political analyst and former Taliban member, said that Pakistan is playing a double game with Kabul, pretending to support negotiations but releasing the Taliban prisoners to please the Pakistan's branch of the Taliban. not Kabul. The Pakistan government, he says, does not want its homegrown militants to disrupt upcoming elections.

"Where are they? What are they doing right now?" he said, referring to the 18 already released. He said that he did not believe those released favored negotiations.

The Afghan peace process has made little headway since it began several years ago, riddled by mistrust among the major players, including the United States.

Genesis, Sex, and Sexuality by Calvin Peronto ? SOMA

My intention in this paper is to examine sexuality in its proper context by viewing it within the created ideal, then to examine the distortions that take place, resulting from the fall. Often the topic of sexuality is enigmatic for the Christian community, and results in confusion at its mention. Now, sexuality in the world?s economy is glorified, boasted in, and used as a selling strategy for most everything. Yet neither confusion nor exaltation are satisfactory and both disfigure God?s created and recreated intention for sex and sexuality. Therefore, this paper will exegetically survey Genesis 1-3 and Romans 1:21-25, with the hope of moving toward a theology of sex and sexuality for the benefit of Jesus? bride. Masturbation shall also be examined; specifically in light of Romans 1, for this topic is hardly spoken of theologically. I do not desire to cast stones, nor do I want to be controversial, but rather I think that we must see what sin truly is and what it does to us and to our relationships with others. To that end, I write this first paper to view the deforming nature of sin regarding sex and sexuality. I hope to write a following paper that will examine sexuality within its re-created context, namely to inspect the sexual implications of having the image of God renewed in Jesus Christ, and how new life in Him changes the distortions of the fall, bringing about restoration, meaning and purpose for sex and sexuality.

Genesis 1

Chapter one displays with broad-brush strokes the movements of God in the making of the cosmos, culminating in the creation of man. Both the man and the woman, as the highest point of creation, were made in the image and likeness of God for the purpose of displaying God and being like him (vs. 26). Everything that men and women were to do was to be based on the substratum of the image ontology, as seen in their mandate to rule over all creation as vice regents under God the Cosmic King. Also they were to be fruitful and multiply, so that they may have offspring in their image, which still bears the divine, just as God made offspring bearing his own image. Man and woman were made to be in community, as their creator himself is a community. It is important to see the clear indication of the tri-unity of God in the deliberation to make mankind in his image in vs. 26. They were made sexually distinct as male and female (vs. 27), indicating likeness yet distinction and both are image bearers and equal with glory and honor (Ps. 8). This distinction magnifies the need of each to be in relationship with the other; individually they are incapable of fulfilling the mandate given them. God?s blessing upon the man and woman (vs. 28) provides the benevolent approval and also the necessary means of completing their mandate.

Genesis 2

This next chapter provides a closer look at the specific creation of the man and woman. The Lord God forms (yatsar) the man from the dust like a potter, while the woman is built (banah) as a complex structure; there is difference yet there is dignity in each person. The man was made in covenant with God with stipulations and also future blessings should he keep the covenant. Immediately following the commands given the man, God declares that it is not good for man to be alone (2:18); Adam needs a helper for covenantal faithfulness and obedience to the Lord in working the garden and keeping it. The ?helper? who is given to Adam is one who would be in covenant with him. Thus, there are two covenantal relationships in which the man is found: one with God and one with the woman. Both are closely connected and interdependent. Again, the approval of the institution of marriage is seen through the Lord God being the only active person in the creation of the woman and in the presentation of her to the man.

The narrator clarifies the union of the man and the woman in marriage, namely the separation from the closest physical bond prior to the sexual relationship. The language used for ?leave? in vs. 24, is harsh, for azab is commonly translated as ?forsakes? showing the force needed to sever familial ties. Following the act of severance is the holding fast to his wife, the commitment and steadfastness, which binds the two together. Thus the one flesh union is realized, being of the same body, not being complete without the other. This reality is seen in the sexual action of the relationship. The man and woman function together and are necessary parts to make the whole; their physical bodies cannot reproduce alone. While the result of sex is the bearing of children, only considering and valuing that end is to miss something very important. They literally become one flesh in sex, while they are one flesh figuratively in every other area of life. Here, in sexual union, they manifest being one; they experience being one flesh physically and enjoy giving love and life to one another. This chapter finishes with the declaration that they were naked. There is an unnecessary clarification, for the text says, ?and the two of them were naked, the man and his wife? as if the text were unclear. This is simply meant to indicate the gravity of the statement, for in a post-fall context nakedness always implies shame. But then, both were exposed before the other, vulnerable with the other and yet there was no shame.

These first two chapters provide the created ideal for man and woman; namely, to be working together for the service of the Lord in the Garden of Eden, which was where the Lord God himself was present. They were to reflect the very glory of God and were to eat from the Tree of Life and be confirmed, receiving sacramental blessing. These two chapters provide dignity and equality for the man and the woman, both with needs that the other could fulfill, as is seen in the creation of the woman as ?the helper fit for him.? All creation is considered very good and in its proper place, functioning as it should with mankind as the image-bearers of God being stewards over all creation. These two chapters set the perfect stage of the created good, closing with the vulnerable intimate nakedness of the primal couple as the final image of its perfection. This perfection is what would crumble through the arrival of cosmic distortion through sin and disobedience.

Genesis 3

This chapter displays sin?s entrance into the world and the destructive repercussions that affect the creation, which has been declared ?very good?. The woman is deceived and takes the fruit from the tree and the man eats with her. Because of the second person plural verbs in verses 1-5, it seems that Adam was present with Eve during the temptation without action. Immediately following, the fracture of the primal marital relationship is seen in the actions of the man and the woman, viz. the making of loincloths out of leaves to cover their nakedness. It is important to see that this is prior to the hearing of the Lord in the garden. This is the reaction of the couple to one another: the hiding of themselves from the vision of the other (vs. 7). Here, shame and guilt come to the man and the woman through their own disobedience. The most fundamental relationship in creation is shattered through their rebellion against God. The woman was taken from the naked body of the man and they were of the same flesh. They had obviously seen each other?s naked bodies before, but that was in the context of faithfulness and communion with God. Now, being estranged from him, they are consequently estranged from one another and so they seek to cover up their vulnerability. They cover the parts of their bodies which are the clear indicators of their differences, yet these differences are what make them necessary for the other in the fulfillment of God?s mandate given them. Thus, the hiding of their physical bodies shows the loss of union in the primal couple, and the loincloths signal the great divide between them as a result of their sin. Through their one act of disobedience the mandate given them by God has been undermined.

The Lord God then comes to confront the couple who hide because of fear. When Adam is questioned, his initial response is one of blame on the woman and possibly even blame on God: ?The woman whom you gave to be with me??(vs. 12). In this act of blame shifting the man seems to resemble the characteristics of the one later known as the ?The Accuser? more than his creator.? The Lord God inflicts the punishment of pain on the woman in the bearing of children, and he inflicts pain upon the man in the working of the ground (vs. 17). Also, take note that the punishment of the couple reveals brokenness in the ideal relationships between their respective sources. That is to say, the man was taken from the ground and was to eat from the trees of the garden (Gen. 1:29), but now the ground is cursed and from it the man will eat (vs. 17), also with the assurance of death (vs. 19). The woman was made from man as the perfect counterpart, out of his very flesh and bone and was named by the man. Now, because of the judgment of God as a result of their disobedience, the man and woman have a ruptured and disjointed relationship. In contradistinction to the two of them ruling together over all creation the woman will now seek to subvert the authority of the man and the man will rule over her (vs. 16). It is not my intention at this point to discuss gender roles greatly, however I think that it is clear that before the fall, both sexes had complete dignity and honor because they were distinct from each other with need of the other. However, I would caution the extrapolation of gender roles solely from Genesis 1-3, but would encourage the examination of key New Testament passages, which reflect on Gen. 1-3; such as Eph. 5:21-33; 1 Cor. 11:6-16 and 1 Tim. 2:9-14.? Yet here in the declaration of God, concerning the results of the fall, the woman will seek independence from the man and also power over him while the man would abuse his authority in the subjugation of the woman under his power.? It is clear that image-likeness, which consists of union and communion with the man and the woman, is economically broken; for the tasks given them requires the two persons unified in order for completion, yet sin turns the two parts of the whole against one another bringing the fulfillment of the creation mandate to a startling halt.

Yet amidst the wreckage of the fall there is grace as seen in the Lord God making garments for Adam and Eve. The Lord God provides for the man and the woman coverings more adequate than the fragile leafy loincloths. Their new clothes enable them to function better than being without?foreshadowing the sacrificial system of the Mosaic Law (vs. 21). In addition to grace, there is also promise of the seed of the woman who will crush the head of the serpent (vs. 15).

So, although there are immediate and devastating consequences to the fall, future victory is assured through the promise to the Serpent of the Coming One. This chapter closes with an image of dissatisfaction and disappointment, for though the man and woman have the promise and the better garments made from skins, they are still driven from the presence of God in the Garden of Eden. Furthermore, they are prevented from reentry by a cherub with an ever-turning flaming sword to guard the way to the tree of life (vs. 24). Therefore, there is incredible anticipation for the fulfillment of the promise when the Serpent would be crushed and when the way back to the created ideal of the Garden of Eden would be provided. Certainly this anticipation also extends to the recreation of the man and the woman and the restoration of the image ontology.

Masturbation

Now that this history has been viewed I would like to examine one aspect of the sexual implications of the fall: masturbation. God?s good intention for the primal couple was that they should bear children in their own and his image-likeness, as a result of the love that they have for one another, of which sex is a sign and seal. It is clear that this was the context in which sexual relations were to be had, that is, in the marital union between a man and a woman. Now, with this foundation laid, I will discuss masturbation in the context of Romans 1:21-25.

Just prior to this passage, Paul describes the noetic effects of sin and unrighteousness, into which every person is born. Verses 21 and 22 form a transition from the intellectual posture of the rebellious man to his further degradation as a result of the fall, specifically understood in image-likeness language. Mankind, though knowing the immortal God, exchanged his glory (vs. 22). The glory of God was originally what the man and the woman were to be and to participate in, but now mankind has as their economic purpose self-reflection. Mankind now considers their own image-likeness to be their goal, though the folly of this exchange is evident in the adjectives: immortal God and mortal man (vs. 23). Here, as a result of self-worship, man?s purpose is turned inward with the lusts of their hearts and the dishonoring of their bodies; they serve themselves instead of God their Creator who is alone worthy to be worshiped (vs. 25). Therefore it is not difficult to see how masturbation is a result of the atrophy of the human person through their exchange of image-likeness for self-idolatry and worship.

Masturbation is the taking of physical pleasure, for self-worship, outside of the God ordained, covenantal context. It is motivated by the lusts of the heart, the craving and desire to be pleased, manifesting the foolishness and darkness of the human heart, which truly considers itself worthy to be worshiped. Sex was to be between two people and sexual pleasure was only to be received by the individual as they gave it to their spouse. Sex was the physical manifestation of the love one had for another with the goal of imaging God in their union and reproduction, which is life giving, though now masturbation is the physical manifestation of the love of self. It was the seal that forged deeper intimacy and further developed trust and commitment, something to be shared, but now masturbation is the outworking of pride and the stroking of ones egotistical idolatry. When one masturbates, the proper role of sex is destroyed; they continually subvert God?s institution and God himself as the only one worthy of worship, for the worship of the self is most incredibly displayed in this act. The enjoyment of the marital union is soiled and the image-likeness of God, which was mankind?s, is forsaken?as though it were beneath us.

It is important to see that the action itself, regardless of motivation, is disfiguring sexuality as God intended, for sexual pleasure was never to be singularly received. Furthermore, even if one is not thinking impure thoughts while masturbating, their motivation will always be selfish, for sex was intended to be reciprocal action between two people. Yet masturbation is devoid of another person and therefore is contrary to the image-likeness, which was given man and woman in creation. Do recall that the man and the woman were made to physically ?fit together? and were to be unified in order to fulfill God?s mandate and thus image God. Furthermore, although masturbation is a solitary action oft done in secret, it must not be thought that there are solitary consequences and repercussions. To put it plainly, masturbation does not just affect the sole participant because when one member of the body distorts itself, the other members will reap the consequences. We must consider the corporate consequences of this supposedly secret sin.

Conclusion

It has been my intention in this reflection to be beneficial by properly framing our understanding of God?s intention in the creation of sexuality. The church must not remain silent regarding sexual issues. We must understand the proper context for sex, and thus consecrate it and our bodies, as they are the members of Christ and the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:15-20).
