ZTE Open, the company's first Firefox OS phone, gets a spec sheet at MWC

ZTE Open, the company's first Firefox OS phone, gets a full spec sheet at MWC

Remember that ZTE teased the MWC debut of its upcoming Firefox OS phone? Well, according to this spec sheet spotted by a tipster at ZTE's MWC booth, said device will be appropriately named ZTE Open, and it'll come with a moderate set of components: a Cortex-A5-based Qualcomm MSM7225A (which is known to clock at either 600MHz or 800MHz), a 3.5-inch HVGA TFT display with capacitive touchscreen, 256MB DDR SDRAM, 512MB NAND storage and the usual set of radios like WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 (with EDR3), GPS and FM radio. Interestingly, there will be a 3.2-megapixel front-facing camera, but it appears that there'll be none on the back. The Open will be available in three SKUs with different UMTS bands: 850/1900, 850/2100 and 900/2100. As always, we'll be sharing the full announcement and hands-on once we see the phone at MWC, though we have a feeling that we've already played with it before.

Update: As some of you have pointed out, yes, the "FF" may actually mean "fixed focus" instead of "front-facing," and the former seems more likely.

You Don?t Want An iWatch

thewatchProposing that entrenched sub-cultures should try something new is dangerous. Going into guitar forums with a new idea is a prospect fraught with peril for anyone who dares move beyond the six-strings-and-a-dream mentality of guitar purists. The same goes for folks who pitch wine in a box at a vintage tasting session and those who might want to add some new technology to a classic car. In short, the if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it crowd will tell you to get out of here with your fancy new concoction.

Trump Twitter Hacked? The Donald Quotes Lil Wayne Lyric About ?Hoes? Before Quickly Deleting It

According to Donald Trump, his Twitter account was ?seriously hacked? this morning. Trump tweeted out the Lil Wayne lyric, ?These hoes think they classy, well that?s the class I?m skippen? to his more than 2 million followers and it was retweeted hundreds of times before he decided to delete it.

Twenty minutes later, Trump had apparently regained control of his account, tweeting an ominous warning to the hacking perpetrators.

If a group like the one that recently turned Burger King?s Twitter feed into a McDonald?s ad and turned Jeep?s into one for Cadillac actually did hack Trump?s account, it seems like they would have done more damage than one relatively tame rap lyric. Was this really a malicious hacking incident? Or just a careless mistake by whoever Trump has running his Twitter account? Or maybe Trump?s just using the current Twitter hacking craze to drum up more publicity for himself now that his lawsuit feud with Bill Maher seems to have died down. What do you think?

Pistorius: Lover caught in tragedy or killer?

(AP) ? Oscar Pistorius portrayed himself as a lover caught in tragedy, wielding a pistol and frightened as he stood only on his stumps, then killed his girlfriend after mistaking her for an intruder on Valentine's Day.

Prosecutors, however, said the double-amputee Olympian committed premeditated murder, planning the slaying, then firing at Reeva Steenkamp as she cowered behind his locked bathroom door with no hope of escape.

"She couldn't go anywhere," Prosecutor Gerrie Nel told a packed courtroom Tuesday. "It must have been horrific."

Weeping uncontrollably, Pistorius listened as his words were read out in court by his attorney during the opening of a two-day bail hearing, his first public account of the events surrounding the shooting death of Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model and reality TV star who had spoken out against violence against women.

"I fail to understand how I could be charged with murder, let alone premeditated murder, as I had no intention to kill my girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp," Pistorius said in the sworn affidavit. "I deny the aforesaid allegation in the strongest terms."

It was the first time that the prosecution and Pistorius provided details of their radically divergent accounts of the killing, which has shocked South Africans and fans worldwide, who idolized the 26-year-old track star known as the Blade Runner for overcoming his disability to compete in last summer's London Olympics.

Nel said Pistorius committed premeditated murder when he rose from his bed after a fight with Steenkamp, pulled on his prosthetic legs and walked about 20 feet from his bedroom to the locked toilet door and pumped it with four bullets, three of which hit the model.

That contradicted the runner's statement, read aloud by defense attorney Barry Roux, who described how the couple spent a quiet night together in the athlete's upscale home in a gated community in the capital of Pretoria, then went to sleep around 10 p.m.

Sometime before dawn, Pistorius said he awoke, and walking only on his stumps, pulled a fan in from an open balcony and closed it. That's when he said he heard a noise and became alarmed because the bathroom window, which had no security bars, was open and workers had left ladders nearby.

"It filled me with horror and fear," Pistorius said in the statement.

"I am acutely aware of violent crime being committed by intruders entering homes," he said. "I have received death threats before. I have also been a victim of violence and of burglaries before. For that reason I kept my firearm, a 9 mm Parabellum, underneath my bed when I went to bed at night."

Too frightened to turn on a light, Pistorius said, he pulled out his pistol and headed for the bathroom, believing Steenkamp was still asleep "in the pitch dark" of the bedroom.

"As I did not have my prosthetic legs on and felt extremely vulnerable, I knew I had to protect Reeva and myself," he said, adding that he shouted to Steenkamp to call the police as he fired at the closed toilet door.

It was then, Pistorius said, that he realized Steenkamp was not in bed.

He said he pulled on his prosthetic legs and tried to kick down the toilet door before finally giving up and bashing it in with a cricket bat. Inside, he said he found Steenkamp, slumped over but still alive. He said he lifted her bloodied body and carried her downstairs to seek medical help.

But it was too late. "She died in my arms," Pistorius said.

"We were deeply in love and I could not be happier," the athlete said. "I know she felt the same way. She had given me a present for Valentine's Day but asked me only to open it the next day."

Pistorius broke down in sobs repeatedly as his account was read, prompting Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair to call a recess at one point.

"Maintain your composure," the magistrate said. "You need to apply your mind here."

"Yes, my lordship," Pistorius replied, his voice quivering.

Nair adjourned the case until Wednesday without ruling on whether Pistorius would be granted bail. However, he said the gravity of the charge ? which carries a mandatory life sentence ? meant the athlete's lawyers must offer "exceptional" reasons for bail to be granted, making his release unlikely.

Roux, the defense attorney, said there was no evidence to substantiate a murder charge. "We submit it is not even murder. There is no concession this is a murder," he said.

The prosecutor disagreed.

"It is our respectful argument that 'pre-planning' or premeditation do not require months of planning," Nel said. "If ... I ready myself and walk a distance with the intention to kill someone, it is premeditated."

Hundreds of miles from the Magistrate's Court, a memorial service was held for Steenkamp in the south coast city of Port Elizabeth. Six pallbearers carried her coffin, draped with a white cloth and covered in white flowers, into the church for the private service and cremation.

Relatives recalled how the model with a law degree had campaigned against domestic violence and had planned to don black for a "Black Friday" protest in honor of a 17-year-old girl who was recently gang-raped and mutilated.

What "she stood for, and the abuse against women, unfortunately it's gone right around, and I think the Lord knows that statement is more powerful now," said her uncle, Mike Steenkamp.

South Africa has some of the world's worst rates of violence against women and the highest rate in the world of women killed by an intimate partner, according to a study by the Medical Research Council, which said at least three women are killed by a partner every day in the country of 50 million.

Since the shooting, several of Pistorius' sponsors have dropped him. On Tuesday, Clarins Group, which owns Thierry Mugler Perfumes, said it would withdraw all advertising featuring the Olympian. A cologne line with the company, called A(asterisk)Men, bears his image.

Islamists attack Malian troops in Gao

GAO, Mali (AP) ? Black-robed Islamic extremists armed with AK-47 automatic rifles penetrated the most populous city in northern Mali on Sunday, engaging the Malian army in combat in a surprise attack two weeks after French and Malian troops ousted the jihadists.

The attack in Gao shows the Islamic fighters, many of them well armed and with combat experience, are determined and daring and it foreshadows a protracted campaign by France and other nations to restore government control in this vast Saharan nation in northwest Africa.

The Islamic radicals fought against the Malian army for more than two hours and were seen roaming the streets and on rooftops in around the police headquarters in the center of Gao. Gunfire echoed across the city.

Families hid in their homes. One family handed plastic cups of water through the locked iron gate to others hiding on their patio. Piles of onions lay unattended where market women fled when the Islamists arrived.

The fighting appeared to center near the police headquarters, where Malian soldiers with rocket propelled grenades traded fire with the combatants believed to be from the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa, or MUJAO. The only sound was gunfire and the bleating of goats. Soldiers were positioned at every corner in the neighborhood of mud-walled buildings.

Ever since French forces took the town, Islamists had clashed with security forces on its outskirts. This was the first time they succeeded in entering the city. On Saturday night, a suicide bomber detonated himself at a checkpoint at the entrance to Gao. A suicide bomber also blew himself up in Gao on Friday, killing only himself.

Besides Gao, French and Malian forces have also retaken the fabled city of Timbuktu and other places, pushing the Islamic extremists back into the desert, where they pose a constant threat to Malian and allied forces. Several African nations have also contributed troops to the battle against the extremists, who imposed their harsh version of Islamic law in the north,.

The armed Islamists seized the northern half of Mali in April, sending poorly disciplined and equipped Malian forces retreating in disarray. France its military intervention in its former colony on Jan. 11 when the Islamists, many of whom had fought for ex-Libyan leader Moammar Ghadafi, began encroaching on the south, threatening the capital Bamako which lies deep in southern Mali.

France has said that it wants to hand over responsibility to the Malian military and other African nations who have contributed troops and has raised with the United Nations Security Council the possibility of establishing a U.N. peacekeeping operation in Mali.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) ? Golden Globe-winning actor Keifer Sutherland has been awarded the pudding pot after being honored as Man of the Year by Harvard's Hasty Pudding Theatricals.

The roast for the actor took place despite a massive snowstorm hitting the Boston area. The Friday evening event, including presentation of the traditional pudding pot, was moved to the Charles Hotel in Cambridge.

The 46-year-old Sutherland has been in dozens of films. He's perhaps best known for his role as Jack Bauer in the television series "24," for which he won Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy awards. He is currently starring in the television show "Touch."

Last year's Man of the Year was Jason Segel.

The 2013 Woman of the Year, Marion Cotillard (koh-tee-YAR'), was honored last week.

How to switch between lists in Reminders on the iPhone

How to switch between lists in Reminders on the iPhone

The default Reminders app changed a little when iOS 6 came about and the way you switch between lists was one of those changes. If you're the type that creates Reminders lists for different events, the importance of switching between lists quickly is probably pretty important to you. Many users were left wondering if Apple took this functionality away since they couldn't swipe across their lists like they used to.

As it turns out, Apple just changed up where you swipe...

  1. Launch the Reminders app from the Home screen of your iPhone.
  2. At the very top you'll see the name of the list you're currently in.
  3. Opposed to swiping anywhere on the screen, swipe your finger left or right on the name of the list.
  4. You'll notice that this allows you to swipe between lists again.

We aren't exactly sure why Apple changed this functionality but as it turns out, they didn't completely take it away. Just make sure you're swiping across the title of the list and you're good to go!

Eat To Compete: Winter Chopped Salad

Eat To Compete: Winter Chopped Salad
Saturday, February 09, 2013??9:53:43 AM PT
This article first ran in the '09, '10 winter but a good recipe never gets old.

- Recipe & Photos by Casey Weaver -

Winter is one of the best times of the year for leafy green vegetables, root vegetables, and one of my favorite fruits; apples. Throw all these things together and you have yourself a very healthy, seasonal salad. By mixing in a salad here and there, come early spring you will be down to fighting weight and ready to roll. And maybe you?ll fit back into the Levi?s (or those R&R jeans you splurged on, depending on your style) you were wearing before the Holidays.

Ingredients

Salad
2 cups (about) escarole, chopped
2 cups (about) frisee, chopped
1 large Granny Smith apple, shredded
1 large carrot, shredded
3 green onion, sliced ? inch
2 radishes, shredded
? fennel bulb, diced
? cup roasted pecans, coarsely chopped
1/3 cup gorgonzola cheese, crumbled
1 lb (about) boneless, skinless chicken breast
Salt, pepper, and paprika to taste
1 T olive oil (for cooking)

Dressing
1/4 cup light mayonnaise
2 T cranberry juice
juice of one Meyer lemon
1 T olive oil
1 clove garlic, minced
1 t Dijon mustard
salt and pepper to taste

Cook the Chicken Breast
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a heavy, oven safe, skillet over medium heat. Add the chicken and season liberally with salt, pepper, and paprika. Cook about four minutes then flip and cook an additional four to five minutes. Transfer to the preheated oven and cook for about ten minutes, until cooked through. Remove from heat and set aside.

Prepare the Salad
Rinse the escarole and frisee well. Chop about two cups to your desired consistency (be careful not chop too fine or you may end up with a bunch of mush). Place the chopped lettuce in your salad bowl.

Shredding the apple, carrot, and radish is made infinitely easier with the proper attachment and a food processor. Though if you like to work for your food, or know where to find some cheap labor, a good old-fashioned cheese grater works just the same. You can also dice the three, though diced chunks of raw carrot and radish might provide a bit too much bite in your salad. Whatever you decide, add the carrot, apple, and radish to the salad.

Dicing the fennel is easy. Just make some horizontal cuts all the way across the bulb, then turn and slice lengthwise about a quarter of an inch apart. The bulb will naturally cut into nice little cubes, similar to an onion.

Add the remaining ingredients to your salad bowl. Cut the cooked chicken into ? inch cubes and add it, too.

For the Dressing

Combine all ingredients and whisk well. I recommend letting each person dress their own salad to avoid any issues. In my experience, an over (or sometimes under) dressed salad can make for some pretty unhappy cyclists.

Wall Street rises, Nasdaq at 12-year closing high

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Nasdaq composite index closed at a 12-year high and the S&P 500 index at a five-year high as stronger U.S. and international trade data lifted stocks on optimism about the economy.

The S&P 500 also posted a sixth straight week of gains for the first time since August.

Data showed Chinese exports grew more than expected, while another report showed the U.S. trade deficit had narrowed in December, indicating the U.S. economy strengthened in the fourth quarter.

"That may have sent a ray of optimism," said Fred Dickson, chief market strategist at D.A. Davidson & Co in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

Trading volume on Friday was below average for the week as a blizzard swept into the northeastern United States.

The technology sector led the day's gains, with the S&P 500 technology index up 1 percent. Gains in LinkedIn Corp and AOL Inc after they reported quarterly results helped the sector.

The market has posted strong gains since the start of the year, with the S&P 500 up 6.4 percent since December 31. But the advance has dragged in recent days, with fourth-quarter earnings winding down and few incentives to continue the rally on the horizon.

"I think we're in the middle of a trading range and I'd put plus or minus 5 percent around it. Fundamental factors are best described as neutral," Dickson said.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 48.92 points, or 0.35 percent, at 13,992.97. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 8.54 points, or 0.57 percent, at 1,517.93. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 28.74 points, or 0.91 percent, at 3,193.87, its highest closing level since November 2000.

Shares of LinkedIn jumped 21.3 percent to $150.48 after it announced quarterly profits and gave a bullish forecast for the year.

AOL Inc shares rose 7.4 percent to $33.72 after the online company reported higher quarterly profit, boosted by a 13 percent rise in advertising sales.

The CBOE Volatility index, Wall Street's so-called fear gauge, was down 3.6 percent at 13.02. The gauge, a key measure of market expectations of short-term volatility, generally moves inversely to the S&P 500.

"I'm watching the 14 level closely" on the CBOE Volatility index, said Bryan Sapp, senior trading analyst at Schaeffer's Investment Research. "The break below it at the beginning of the year signaled the sharp rally in January, and a rally back above it could be a sign to exercise some caution."

Signs of economic strength overseas buoyed sentiment on Wall Street. Chinese exports grew more than expected in January, while imports climbed 28.8 percent, highlighting robust domestic demand. German data showed a 2012 surplus that was the nation's second highest in more than 60 years, an indication of the underlying strength of Europe's biggest economy.

Separately, U.S. economic data showed the trade deficit shrank in December to $38.5 billion, its narrowest in nearly three years, indicating the economy did much better in the fourth quarter than initially estimated.

Earnings have mostly come in stronger than expected since the start of the reporting period. Fourth-quarter earnings for S&P 500 companies now are estimated up 5.2 percent versus a year ago, according to Thomson Reuters data. That contrasts with a 1.9 percent growth forecast at the start of the earnings season.

Molina Healthcare Inc surged 10.4 percent to $31.88 as the biggest boost to the index after posting fourth-quarter earnings.

Sprint added that it's been able to sell 2.2 million iPhones, while its LTE network, launched last July, now handles more than 3 million connections. The network picked up 401,000 new post-paid subscribers in the process, but according to the figures, shedded 1 million existing ones from the Nextel part of the business. Its future owner, Softbank, was briefly mentioned in passing -- the Now Network received a $3.1 billion bond from the Japanese phone network for the merger.

How to stay productive during the Snowpocalypse

The Eastern half of the United States is gearing up for a massive winter storm this evening, and we're preparing for the worst. Here's how to stay productive during the impending Snowpocalypse.

Apart from the annoying cold and all the white fluffy stuff, the biggest potential inconveniences that go hand-in-hand with a major snowstorm include power outages or Internet outages. Here's what to do if you wake up tomorrow without power or Internet.

Preparing for a power loss
As the icy winds of Hoth blow through your town, they can destroy power lines, overload transformers, and otherwise do a whole lot of damage to the electricity grid. You don't want to wait until you wake up without power to start worrying about it though, so prepare right now with these tips.

Charge up your devices the night beforehand
If you've got a nice supply of laptops, smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices in your house, plug them in now and let them charge up as long as you can. Avoid using them unplugged tonight so you don't forget to plug them back in overnight, and make sure they're powered off (or saving battery in sleep mode) so they don't start draining as soon as the power dies.

Charge up those extra batteries
You probably can't run out and buy extra batteries right now, but if you've got some extra ones lying around, whether they be regular batteries or extended batteries, don't forget to charge those up, too. We all know how much today's smartphones drain battery, so you'll need all the juice you can get.

Dig out your old phones
Chances are, you've got at least one or two (if not several) old phones buried in the basement. Dig out as many as you can find, and charge them up. If your smartphone dies early on in the day, you'll want other phones you can rely on?even if they're just regular feature phones. Lots of us have ditched our landlines, but if you need something in case of an emergency, that old beat up Motorola RAZR is the perfect candidate. Remember that most cellphones can still make emergency calls even if you don't pay for service, and if you can swap your SIM card from your current phone, it's easy to transfer your current service to an old device.

Get the most out of your battery life
No matter what kind of device you have, chances are you can do some optimizing to make that battery last longer. Dim your screen, turn off Bluetooth and other non-essential apps or hardware, and put it to sleep whenever you're not using it. For more device-centric tips, check out our guides to extending the battery life of your Windows laptop, Linux laptop, an Android phone or any other smartphone. You can even eke a few more minutes out of your battery by using the right browser and turning off Flash completely.

Use your car as a phone charger when you really need it
It's not the ideal solution, but if your phone dies and you need one on hand for emergency calls, you can always whip out your car charger and start up your car for a few minutes of charging (you know, if your car will even start). You'll be patting yourself on the back for buying that USB car charger right about now.

Preparing for an Internet outage
Even if your power doesn't go out, your ISP might lose service in the midst of the onslaught (it's happened to a few of us at team Lifehacker during previous storms). If they do, here are your options as far as staying connected.

Tether your phone
It's one of the most tried and true methods for getting wireless Internet, and while it certainly won't provide a connection for the entire day, it can help you get any important work done before enjoying the rest of your snow day. If you're rocking an Android phone, you have quite a few choices, both if you've rooted and if you haven't.

If you're an iPhone user and you haven't paid for tethering from AT&T, you'll have to jailbreak and use previously mentionedMyWi. Note that if you wake up without Internet, you won't be able to jailbreak tomorrow ? so if it's important enough to you, maybe tonight's the night to back up your phone and check out redsn0w. Also note that tethering will drain your battery like crazy, so use your Internet wisely during the few precious moments you have. (That means no Facebook, you guys! It's just going to be full of the same Snowpocalypse statuses anyways).

Rent that movie from iTunes ? just this once ? because Netflix'll be down
You may forget from time to time that Netflix and other similar streaming services actually rely on a stable Internet connection, so when you go to enjoy your day off tomorrow, you might be disappointed to realize you've lost your entire queue. Now would be a good time to check out iTunes' rental system, or something similar. You may not like that whole paying part, but you have to do the best you can with what you've got, right?

Check and see if you're the only oneJust because you've lost power or Internet doesn't mean everyone has. If you've got a Starbucks, McDonalds, or other Wi-Fi plentiful chain near your house, you can always head there to get some work done (you know, if you can even get out of the house). Make sure you've got a car-friendly driveway, too?if you're out of salt, there are a lot of other household items that'll melt that ice, too.If your cell service goes out (or your phone runs out of juice)If your cell goes dead, on either the battery or service side, and you lack for a fall-back landline, you've still got options?especially if your web connection is still active, or you've got another Internet source.

Best option: Google Voice & Gmail calling
If you've already signed up to use Google Voice, you can make free calls from Gmail's chat sidebar. Just sign into Gmail, hit the "+" button to expand chat if it's not already expanded, and click the "Call phone" option. You may need to download a plug-in to get calling working; it might be a good move to already have it installed the night before a big storm hits.

Once the plug-in is installed, you're good to go, and if you use Android or otherwise have your Google Contacts set up, you won't even need to remember your boss' phone number. You'll be using your laptop speakers and tiny mic hole by default; it would be handy to have a USB headset handy, or at least a pair of headphones to prevent echoing and feedback.

Skype out
If you aren't a Google Voice user, the best you can do is a VoIP service like Skype, which lets you call regular phones right from your computer. Of course, if your friends or relatives have Skype, you can call them for free, but if you need to call other people's regular old phones, you'll need to shell out a bit for a SkypeOut number. What's nice, though, is that you can pay as you go?so if you just need a SkypeOut number for the Snowpocalypse, you don't have to subscribe to a monthly plan or anything like that. Check out Skype's pricing plans for more information.

Accept your tech-free day as the gift of productivity
Computers and the Internet are great tools, but they're also great distractions. If you lose your Internet connection, or your power altogether, you may prefer to think of it not as a curse, but a productivity blessing. There are a lot of Internet-free ways you can catch up with work, like going over your to-do list, organizing your files and folders, or even getting some real, distraction-free work done. It might even inspire you to disconnect more often.

Estate Planning for 2013: Time to Create or Update Your Estate Plan ...

On March 31, 2012, the new Massachusetts Uniform Probate Code (MUPC) came into effect, changing nearly every aspect of the administration of estates here in the Commonwealth.? This drastic change in the law of wills and estate administration has estate planners and attorneys across Massachusetts encouraging their clients to take the time to create an estate plan or review whatever plan they currently have in place.

Before creating a personalized estate plan for a client, one of our attorneys will have a meeting to better understand the goals and objectives the client wishes to accomplish with his or her estate plan.? With this information we will create a plan to meet the needs of the client, which may include any of the following estate planning documents:

Last Will and Testament:

A will provides for the proper distribution of probate property to designated beneficiaries pursuant to the wishes of the testator.? A will also appoints a personal representative to settle the estate and a guardian and conservator for any minor children or adult incapacitated persons.

Durable Power of Attorney:

A durable power of attorney gives a named individual the authorization to handle financial matters for another individual (the ?principal?) in the event the principal becomes incapacitated. ?This document can save a lot of time and money avoiding the need to go to court for the appointment of a conservator for an incapacitated person.

Health Care Proxy & Related documents:

Do you know who will be making health care decisions for you in the event you become incapacitated or incapable of making your own health-related decisions?? This document will give a health care agent the authorization to make health care decisions on your behalf should you ever be unable to make those decisions on your own. Along with a health care proxy we will create an authorization for the release of medical records and an advance directive, which can give you health care proxy some guidance as to your wishes about life and death decisions if your health care proxy is ever in a situation to make such a decision for you.

Trusts:

A trust can be used and tailored to achieve a specific goal.? Goals may include but are not limited to reducing estate taxes, avoiding probate, controlling assets after death, or providing for a loved one.

This is just a brief summary of some of the parts of a thorough estate plan.? If you have any questions regarding estate planning or any of the above-mentioned documents, contact us to learn how Finn & Eaton, P.C. can help you with your estate planning needs.

Confirmed: Jelly Bean update planned for BlackBerry 10 Android runtime

Confirmed Jelly Bean update planned for BlackBerry 10 Android runtime

It's official: BlackBerry 10's Android runtime layer will be updated to Jelly Bean. Reports of the announcement, which should please users looking to shore up the platform's app selection, surfaced this morning, apparently stemming from the company's developer-focused BB Jam Europe event in Amsterdam. We've since reached out and received confirmation that it is indeed true, although no timetable has yet to be announced. In the meantime, current Z10 owners can continue to sideload Gingerbread-based apps -- which the runtime layer currently supports -- while they wait for those big name, third-party apps to land in the BlackBerry World store.

Smoking marijuana associated with higher stroke risk in young adults

Feb. 6, 2013 ? Marijuana, the most widely used illicit drug, may double stroke risk in young adults, according to research presented at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference 2013.

In a New Zealand study, ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) patients were 2.3 times more likely to have cannabis, also known as marijuana, detected in urine tests as other age and sex matched patients, researchers said.

"This is the first case-controlled study to show a possible link to the increased risk of stroke from cannabis," said P. Alan Barber, Ph.D., M.D., study lead investigator and professor of clinical neurology at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. "Cannabis has been thought by the public to be a relatively safe, although illegal substance. This study shows this might not be the case; it may lead to stroke."

The study included 160 ischemic stroke/TIA patients 18-55 years old who had urine screens upon admission to the hospital. Among the patients, 150 had ischemic stroke and 10 had TIAs. Sixteen percent of patients had positive drug screens, mostly male who also smoked tobacco.

Only 8.1 percent of controls tested positive for cannabis in urine samples. Researchers found no differences in age, stroke mechanism or most vascular risk factors between marijuana users and non-users.

In previous case reports, ischemic stroke and TIAs developed hours after cannabis use, Barber said. "These patients usually had no other vascular risk factors apart from tobacco, alcohol and other drug usage."

It's challenging to perform prospective studies involving illegal substances such as cannabis because "questioning stroke and control patients about cannabis use is likely to obtain unreliable responses," Barber said.

In the study, the regional ethics committee allowed researchers to use urine samples from other hospitalized patients. But researchers knew only the age, sex and ethnicity for matching due to a lack of consent.

The study provides the strongest evidence to date of an association between cannabis and stroke, Barber said. But the association is confounded because all but one of the stroke patients who were cannabis users also used tobacco regularly.

"We believe it is the cannabis and not tobacco," said Barber, who hopes to conduct another study to determine whether there's an association between cannabis and stroke independent of tobacco use. "This may prove difficult given the risks of bias and ethical strictures of studying the use of an illegal substance," he said. "However, the high prevalence of cannabis use in this cohort of younger stroke patients makes this research imperative."

Physicians should test young people who come in with stroke for cannabis use, Barber said.

"People need to think twice about using cannabis," because it can affect brain development and result in emphysema, heart attack and now stroke, he said.

Facebook makes apps less annoying, blocks some oversharing

Bad news for folks who really love to know about every little thing their friends do using a Facebook app: The social network is finally making apps less annoying by preventing them from automatically posting about every single action taken by a user.

Beginning on Wednesday, expect to see a little bit less spam, but still plenty of notes about the stories your friends are reading on some random news site or the songs they're listening to using their favorite music-streaming service.

Facebook casually made the change official with a tiny note on its developers blog on Monday.

The itty-bitty note was first noticed by the eagle-eyed Mike Isaac of All Things D and basically informs us that Facebook's finally cleaning up the News Feed and Ticker, as it promised it would back in October 2012. At that time, engineer Henry Zhang wrote a post on the official Facebook blog, pointing out that "[w]hen apps automatically publish stories on a person?s behalf in a way that is unexpected, such as when they browse an online store, it can surprise and confuse people." After sharing this incredibly shocking insight ? imagine that users might be annoyed by spammy posts ? the social network decided that something needed to give.

After Zhang's blog post, many developers began ceasing to publish the automatic stories and moved on to the "like," "follow," "listen," "read," and "watch" actions preferred by the social network. On Wednesday, that'll be the only way they can continue pestering you. Yes, those posts aren't going anywhere.

Whew! And here you thought you'd have to start actually talking to your friends in order to know what they're doing!

Can Sunshine Light Skyscrapers Instead of Bulbs?

times-building-at-night EFFICIENT LIGHTING: Can sunshine be used to cut down on lighting costs in skyscrapers, like the New York Times Building, shown here at night with lights on. Image: Flickr / Digiart 2001 / Jason Kuffer

The radiometer tracks the sun's progress across the Manhattan skyline and sends a signal from the roof to the command computer on a floor 90 meters below. Blinds fall slowly with the buzz of an electric motor, cutting off the sun's glare on computer screens. Another computer triggers the shades on the opposite side of the building to rise while also shutting off the air-conditioning and adjusting the internal lights.

The New York Times Co. saves energy at its 52-story headquarters using the oldest lighting technology in the world: the sun. Floor-to-ceiling windows let sunlight flood into the office space and sensors then dim the internal lights to save energy. In the process, compared with other buildings in New York City, the Times Building has reduced its energy use by 24 percent, according to a new report prepared by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).

Letting the sun do the work of lighting up buildings is obvious. It's cheap, it's free and it's as easy as a window. Or, as managing director of Sustainable Energy Partnerships Adam Hinge says, "there are lessons we can relearn" from the building practices of the time before cheap fossil fuels and ubiquitous air-conditioning. As it stands, the energy used to light, cool and vent the buildings of the world's cities accounts for roughly 40 percent of humanity's carbon dioxide emissions, the greenhouse gas primarily responsible for climate change.

But using daylight turns out to be more complicated than building floor-to-ceiling windows. A modern building in a city like New York requires specific glazing on its windows to control glare as well as some form of shade to block at least some of the sunlight and enable employees to see their computer screens. An energy-efficient system requires dimmable lights that must be affordable, long-lasting and easy to maintain. And the people using the building must like the system?or at least find it easy to control.

In a bid to gain a better understanding of all those factors, the Times built a full-scale model of 420 square meters of the building in College Point, Queens, to test various systems before going ahead with final construction in Manhattan. Even then, outfitting the Times?s 20 floors of office space with daylighting equipment constituted "the largest direct procurement of innovative lighting and shading technologies in the U.S.," according to the LBNL report.

New York City boasts some 10 percent of all the office space in the entire U.S.?more than 50.1 million square meters?and could save $70 million a year in power costs, or roughly 340 gigawatt-hours of electricity, by relying more on sunshine (as well as even simpler fixes like turning off the lights that are not needed at night.) That's according to another recently released report dubbed "Let There Be Daylight" from Green Light New York, an advocacy group, which notes that more than a quarter of the energy used in New York City's buildings goes to interior lighting, which is often used even in the middle of a sunny day.

All the way back in 1977, when LBNL's buildings guru Stephen Selkowitz began working on energy-efficient construction, his very first project advocated the use of more daylight. Yet, in the 35 years since then the trend has been in the opposite direction. "I'm a failure, because we should have solved the problem by now," he says. "It has not been scalable," meaning the lessons learned in one building have not been translated into other similar buildings or even other cities.

The Times Building is an example of that as well. Whereas the company itself employs a sophisticated daylighting and energy savings system, it only inhabits slightly less than half of the 140,000-square-meter building. The remaining space is rented out to tenants by building manager Forest City Ratner?and not all the tenants opt for such systems, which can cost from $2 to $10 per square foot (0.09 square meter) of office space.

Of course, that cost does deliver roughly three kilowatt-hours of energy savings per square foot per year, by Selkowitz's analysis of the Times Building, or roughly $13,000 saved annually per floor. That's "pretty darn good," he notes. But building managers are often skeptical. Even New York Times facilities director Patrick Whelan thought the new system, especially the under-floor air-circulation vents, would be a "nightmare" when the company moved in back in 2007. (Under-floor vents save energy by requiring fewer pumps to move the air as well as relying on the natural warming of the internal building air to allow circulation. Cold air comes up from floor, warms and rises to the ceiling.)

"Basically, things are working really well," Whelan says. The under-floor vents proved easier to access and quieter than traditional pumped vents in the ceiling and, in five years, only 5 percent of the energy-saving, dimmable fluorescent lights have had to be replaced?proving that the bulbs are durable. "To tell you the truth, we get very few complaints," he adds.

Yet, thanks to new buildings rising to the north and west, the sophisticated system now has to be retrained to deal with unexpected glares off of new windows. That requires a comprehensive study of reflections and then a total reprogramming of the computer control system. In the end, although using sunshine seems easy, "you can't fall out of bed and do this by yourself," Selkowitz says.

Russian judge fired after falling asleep in court

(AP) ? A Russian judge has been fired after he caught 40 winks in court and then sentenced an outraged defendant to five years in prison.

Judge Yevgeny Makhno of Blagoveshchensk City Court in Russia's Far East was forced to resign Friday for obviously falling asleep several times while trying a businessman on charges of fraud.

The case became a national scandal after the defendant's lawyer posted several videos online of Makhno asleep in court. The videos were then shown on state television.

Makhno claimed that he was not sleeping, but listening with his eyes closed, the reports said.

But since a higher court decided not to punish him, Makhno only has to take an exam to be reinstated.

The defendant, however, will be given a new trial.

My writing blog: Next step?

So my agent and I just went through a pretty intense round of edits on "Before White." She went through my first book with a fine-tooth comb, admitting she was being picky, but tearing the book to pieces. She gave me a ton of suggestions for places to improve grammatically, character motivation, showing things (holy cow I told a lot I should have shown back when I wrote this!), and, most importantly to me, showing me places to cut things down.

In the end, the book is about 10,000 words shorter than it was and much more streamlined. Chapters have been moved, events are now SHOWN and not told, and hopefully the grammatical mistakes are corrected. I will admit there were a few changes made I didn't quite understand the purpose of (such as rewording some sentences), but I went along with her suggestions since everything else seemed to be so right on the money.

She has the book back now and is reviewing it for any final changes. She'll then write a query letter and try to get the book out in front of publishers. Caitie has often joked that it would be something if we managed to sell this book after all the other writing and attempts haven't succeeded. I sincerely hope she's right and we can get my writing career going.

And I'm so ready to get it going. We've discussed numerous possibilities for what my future holds, and ultimately the one career I feel I most want to do is to become a professional writer. Being able to set my own hours to write is very appealing. I don't mind being on deadlines - I'm great with deadlines. If anything (and I would guess Rachael would agree with this) I work too quickly more often than not. The idea of going to writing panels and seminars, speaking in front of schools or bookstores or what have you sounds like a ton of fun. Yeah, I know the traveling would be hard, but I think it would be exciting and an adventure - something my current career certainly lacks.

I think the idea of signing books looks like fun. My wrist will hurt, sure, and I'll get sick of it after a while I'm sure, but I don't know that meeting fans and meeting people who are excited to read my stuff would ever get boring.

Being a media presence on twitter and a blog and Facebook? I could absolutely do that. It sounds like it might be frustrating in terms of balancing time, but I tend to write in spurts anyway. There's no reason I couldn't do that as well, and do it fully.

As for the money, certainly I would hope to be able to sustain myself on what I get from writing and from any fees accrued through speaking. If I need a part time job to support myself, freelance writing or some other job wouldn't be too terrible until such a time as writing could be my focus. It might be difficult for a little while for us, but it's better than complaining about work every day, is it not?

Am I missing anything else a writer would have to do? Is there some aspect of the job that I'm not getting? Is there any reason that I shouldn't have this as my dream? Is it unattainable for me? I certainly hope not...

I certainly hope not.
