Dick Cheney recalls knowing his heart was 'at an end'

With a new heart, Dick Cheney is back.

In an exclusive interview with ABC News' Jonathan Karl, Cheney reflects on the "miracle" that a heart transplant promises to give him years of added life. And Cheney shows he is as confrontational as ever, taking on President Obama - and even Sarah Palin.

Cheney, 71, details how far back he has come. He remembers waking from weeks of heavy sedation after having a pump installed in his heart in 2010, a grueling operation that left him seeing his own mortality in the mirror.

"Two years ago this time I was on a respirator, heavily sedated. Just had a pump? installed on my heart because my heart had gotten so weak after six heart attacks and 30-some years of heart disease that it was, you know, it was at the end," he said.

"I lost 40 pounds. I was heavily sedated in the intensive care unit for weeks afterwards. I had pneumonia while I was in recovering from the surgery. And by the time I came out from under I looked in a mirror and what I saw was my dad shortly before he died. He was in his 80s," Cheney said.

That is why Cheney, in his first interview since his heart transplant four months ago, calls his recovery "nothing short of a miracle."

"I haven't felt this good in years," he said.

He doesn't know who gave him his new heart because protocol is to maintain anonymity, but the former vice president said there is a program that allows an intermediary to reach out to the donor family to see if they want contact with the recipient.

"At some point I would be, you know, certainly amenable to contact with the family. But we have not at this point exchanged any information," Cheney said.

If contact was made, Cheney said he would "express my gratitude for what's a magnificent gift. I can't think of a more magnificent gift than to be given additional years of life."

Healthy again, Cheney has resumed his love of fishing and his frank evaluations of politicians, including himself.

Cheney left office as one of the most unpopular vice presidents in the country's history, but the man known for his defiance of public opinion is vintage Cheney.

"I'm very comfortable with what I did, and why I did it, and how I did it," he said.

When asked if he had any regrets, Cheney replied, "Not really."

"You can't be judged, and shouldn't judge, people in those senior levels by the polls," he told ABC News.

He does not spare his fellow Republicans, calling Sen. John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his vice president running mate a "mistake."

Cheney said Palin had been governor of Alaska for two years at the time and "did not pass the test" of being ready to be president.

He also wryly described how the list of vice presidential candidates is used by officials up for reelection.

"I had a couple of calls from politicians who'd say, 'You know, it'd really help me in my race back home, Dick, if I was on the list.' Done. You're on the list," said Cheney. "Then somebody could go leak the fact that they were on the list."

Cheney helped vet candidates for Gerald Ford in 1976 and George W. Bush in 2006 that ultimately settled on Cheney.

"But that was the big list. It was easy to get on the big list. The tough part is the small list, the one that's really under active consideration," he said.

Cheney's harshest criticism, however, was for President Obama.

"I obviously am not a big fan of President Obama. I think he's been one of our weakest presidents. I just fundamentally disagree with him philosophically. I'd be hard put to find any Democratic president that I've disagreed with more," he said.

When asked if he thought Obama was "worse than Jimmy Carter," Cheney replied, "Yes."

Cheney gave Obama credited for killing al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, but added that "a lot of that intelligence that laid the groundwork for what ultimately led to the capture of Bin Laden [was] as a result of programs we had in place in the Bush administration."

He was sharply critical, however, of Obama's plans to withdraw troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.

"We should not be running for the exits. We should not be turning our backs on our friends in that part of the world," he said.

India to name new finance minister

India's Home Minister P. Chidambaram is likely to switch to finance minister this week, stepping into the key role at a difficult time for the once-booming economy, reports said on Tuesday.

Chidambaram, who has already served twice as head of the finance ministry between 1996-1998 and 2004-2008, will be appointed as part of a cabinet reshuffle, The Indian Express newspaper and CNN-IBN news channel said.

The portfolio is currently being handled by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who took over from former finance minister Pranab Mukherjee when he resigned last month to run for election to become India's president.

The prime minister's office declined to comment to AFP on the reports.

Chidambaram was praised by economists for his pro-business budgets during his previous stints as finance minister, although he faced brickbats from the Left for his pursuit of foreign investment.

He was asked to take over the home ministry after the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which killed 166 people and left India reeling.

The cabinet reshuffle could also see young politician Rahul Gandhi, scion of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty which has produced three prime ministers since independence, take his first role in government, unnamed sources told The Express.

News of the possible changes to the cabinet comes ahead of the parliament's monsoon session, which is set to begin on August 8.

Planning for Important End of Life Health Care Decisions ...

Do you have the necessary legal documents and advance directives in place for end of life care and medical emergencies?

By Bob DeMarco
Alzheimer's Reading Room
Lately I have been receiving more and more questions about Advance directives and legal documents for end of life care.

Shortly after I came to Delray Beach to take care of Dotty I had all of the necessary documents executed, signed, and notarized.

This included legal documents like a durable power of attorney, designation of health care surrogate, Do Not Resuscitate (DNR), and living will.

Subscribe to the Alzheimer's Reading Room

You can take several approaches to these documents. For example, you can hire an attorney to do them for you. Or, you can do what I did, go out on the Internet find what you need, get them completed and executed.

Here is a list of the some of the documents you need, or might need.

  • Durable Power of Attorney for Finances gives someone called a trustee the power to make legal and financial decisions for the person with Alzheimer's dementia.
  • Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care gives someone called a proxy the power to make health care decisions for the person with Alzheimer's dementia.
  • Living Will states the person?s wishes for health care at the end of life.
  • Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) this form tells health care staff how the person wants end-of-life health care managed.
  • Will tells how the person wants his or her property and money to be divided among those left behind.
  • Living Trust tells someone called a trustee how to distribute a person?s property and money

You can contact your State Attorney Generals' Office to obtain help and advice.

Thanks to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and Caring Connections you can get all or most of the documents you need on one website.

Importantly, the documents are tailor made for each state.

Download Your State's Advance Directives

You should have all of these documents executed and available long before you need them.

Carole Larkin had a very good suggestion. Put a copy in the glove compartment of your car just in case you need them in an emergency situation.

Health Benefits of Regular Exercise and Physical activity

It?s important to get healthy and stay healthy to minimize health risks, minimize costs of treating disease and to have a high quality of life. The health benefits of regular exercise and physical activity are hard to ignore. With the hectic pace of modern life, it is imperative for each of us to have a good health because without it, we would be nowhere! Being healthy and fit protects us from developing diseases like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, and other life-threatening disorders. Exercise is an important part of a lifetime of good health. Most people do not realize that exercise provides both mental and physical health benefits. People who exercise regularly burn more calories and use blood sugar more efficiently than those who don?t.

When you engage in physical activity, you burn calories. Exercise can help prevent excess weight gain. Regular physical activity can improve your muscle strength and boost your endurance. Exercise and physical activity deliver oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and help your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. Regular exercise can help you feel less stressed, help with weight loss, can improve your self-esteem and improve your overall mood. Being healthy and fit holds a number of benefits and one of them is having an opportunity to enjoy almost every pleasure that life holds without worrying for things that people with ailments do. If you are not fit then you can?t do any work properly. Staying fit is very important to our longevity and our overall health.

Being physically fit can help to improve a person?s coordination, balance, endurance, flexibility, strength, agility, and physical appearance. In order to be physically fit a person must address both aerobic and strength training. Not only are they both necessary, they actually complement each other. Staying physically fit is part of staying mentally and emotionally healthy. Regular physical activity can help you fall asleep faster and deepen your sleep. Exercise gives you a chance to unwind, enjoy the outdoors or simply engage in activities that make you happy. Exercise and physical activity are a great way to feel better, gain health benefits and have fun. Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. You may also feel better about your appearance and yourself when you exercise regularly, which can boost your confidence and improve your self-esteem. Studies continue to show that it is never too late to start exercising and that even small improvements in physical fitness can significantly lower the risk of death.

While exercise helps one to achieve the desired physical shape, its effects on the mind and the soul are also well established. This also makes the body more efficient in energy management, which in turn helps in increasing stamina. With regular exercise, the heart rate comes back to resting levels sooner after you have performed a strenuous activity.

Bodysolid products feature materials and component parts of only the highest quality and durability available. One advantage in using these exercise equipment? is the selection of ?models that will help you get in shape, keep fit and stay healthy.

Samsung confirms Galaxy Note and Galaxy S3 appearance in Olympic opening ceremony

Android Central

In what seems to be a slightly premature blog post, Samsung has confirmed the appearance of the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S III (S3) at the Olympic opening ceremony in London -- an event some four hours away at the time of writing. Referring to the ceremony in the past tense, a post on the official Samsung Tomorrow blog noted Samsung's position as a global Olympic partner, and said that phones were featured "as part of a dance routine," in the show seen by "more than one billion people across the globe."

Samsung says to go to the official Samsung Mobile YouTube page for behind-the-scenes interviews from the opening ceremony, but it looks like these aren't live just yet.

We'll know more when the ceremonies kick off at 9pm London time (4pm EDT, 1pm PDT)

Small breakthroughs offer big hope of AIDS 'cure'

Small but significant breakthrough studies on people who have been able to overcome or control HIV were presented at a major world conference on ways to stem the three-decade-old disease.

One study focused on a group of 12 patients in France who began treatment on antiretroviral drugs within 10 weeks of becoming infected with human immunodeficiency virus, but then stopped the therapy after nearly three years.

The virus has stayed away for a median of six years in the group, known as the Visconti Cohort, which stands for "Virological and Immunological Studies in CONtrollers after Treatment Interruption."

This unique group of people did not completely eliminate HIV, but continued to possess it at an extremely low level in their cells and did not become sick.

"These results suggest that the antiretroviral treatment should be started very early after infection," said Charline Bacchus, lead researcher of the study at France's national AIDS research agency ANRS.

"Six years after interruption of treatment, patients treated early on in the post-infection period present a perfect ability to control the HIV infection."

Scientists are continuing to study the immune characteristics of this group for clues as to why they do not need prolonged medication. For most HIV patients, antiretroviral drugs must be taken for life.

There are currently 34 million people living with HIV worldwide. In low- and middle-income nations, which are the most affected by the pandemic, about eight million people are now taking antiretrovirals for treatment, about half those in need.

The second study involved two HIV-positive men whose DNA showed no trace of the virus eight and 17 months respectively after receiving stem cell transplants from an outside donor as treatment for blood cancer.

The men have been followed for two and three and a half years respectively, with no sign of the virus's return. Researchers have also noted they experienced a sharp decline in HIV antibodies, suggesting the virus is gone.

Their cases are different from the well-known "Berlin patient," American Timothy Brown, who is considered cured of HIV and leukemia five years after receiving similar bone marrow transplants from a rare donor naturally resistant to HIV, or lacking a CCR5 receptor.

The two men in the study received transplants from donors with the CCR5 receptor, which acts as a gateway allowing HIV to penetrate the cells, so they were not afforded protection against the virus by that mutation.

Researchers believe that by continuing to treat the men with antiretroviral drugs during the process, the medicine prevented the donor cells from becoming infected until they were able to provide the men with new immune defenses.

The study was presented at the 19th International AIDS Conference by Daniel Kuritzkes, professor of medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Massachusetts.

Reacting to the news, Brown expressed "joy" at the potential for two more men to be free of HIV.

"As I have said many times before, I want everyone to be cured of this disease. We can only hope that this case and today's development represents the beginning of the end of this plague," he said in a statement.

A third study on how a cancer drug helped purge HIV from the cells of patients was described by lead researcher David Margolis of the University of North Carolina.

Researchers used the chemotherapy drug vorinostat to revive and so unmask latent HIV in the CD4+ T cells of eight trial patients who were also taking antiretroviral drugs to stop the virus from multiplying.

Margolis, whose study was published Wednesday in the British journal Nature, told reporters that researchers are energized toward the goal of finding a cure for HIV, even if it remains many years away.

"You cannot argue with the value of the goal and we cannot get there without working on it and I cannot say how long it will take," he said.

"But I think there is a clear path and we can make progress."

Spanish spelling bee is estancamiento (a stalemate)

David Brise?o / Rio Rancho Public Schools

Co-champions Joana Fernandez and Judith Villa with their winners' plaques.

By Monica Olivera Hazelton and M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

Two star students battled it out for an hour and a half in Albuquerque, N.M., correctly spelling word after word, before judges threw up their hands and declared a tie in the National Spanish Spelling Bee last week.

Judith Villa, a fifth-grader from Sunland Park Elementary School in Anthony, N.M., and Joana Fernandez, an eighth-grader at Rio Rancho Middle School in the Rio Rancho, N.M., were the finalists after 17 other pupils from six other states fell by the wayside Saturday.

Judith and Joana?kept going, and going, and going ? for 53 more rounds. They polished off words like unguiculado (meaning "unguiculate"), cabizca?do ("downhearted") and vehementemente ("vehemently").

More on this story from NBCLatino.com

Monica Olivera Hazelton is a contributor for NBC Latino. M. Alex Johnson is a reporter for NBC News. Follow him on Twitter and Facebook.

Eventually, the judges ran out of approved words and declared it a draw. Jose Daniel Lara Ar?valo of Legacy Middle School in San Antonio, Texas, finished third.

The contest, which is in its second year, tests children whose native language?is Spanish or who are learning the language.

Spanish words are relatively easier to spell than English words, because groups of letters consistently produce the same sounds and the vowels typically are pronounced the same way. But students must also?note Spanish diacritical marks, which makes the competition more challenging.

maxmi's Site - Anti-bigotry gaming site hacked, defaced by bigots

17 hrs.

This is not a sad story that will make you shake your head at the cruelty of humanity in general and the gaming community in particular. Despite the headline above, this story ? at least for the time being ? has a happy ending, one that just might give you hope for?humanity in general and the gaming community in particular.

But first to begin: Earlier this month a gamer and comedian named Sam Killermann launched a website called Gamers Against Bigotry.??As a lifelong gamer, Killermann had?enjoyed playing online games as a way to relax. What he didn't?enjoy: the racist, homophobic and misogynistic words so?frequently?tossed around during online gaming sessions.

"They?re tossed around like popcorn," he told me during a phone interview,?ticking off some of the most popular slurs. "It?s amazing how many times you?ll hear those words in a 15-minute span of 'Call of Duty.'?" (If you want to hear what it's like?for yourself, check out this NSFW?video?and this one,?or In-Game editor Todd Kenreck's interview below?with the folks behind?Fat, Ugly or Slutty, a?site?that?collects examples of sexual harassment in gaming.)
/>

"For a lot of people who play games it?s a frustration to hear people throwing around slurry, bigoted speech, but we've never felt like there was anything we could do about it," he said, explaining that every time he had tried to politely ask a fellow player?to drop the hateful?trash talk it had only made things worse. "I?ve approached it in so many ways and it doesn?t matter what I say. You essentially add fuel to their fire."

Sure, you can mute or report offensive players. But that's not only an inconvenience,?it has also?done nothing?to stop the larger problem.?Killermann told a friend that someone should do something about it. Then he decided he would be that someone.

And so he launched the Gamers Against Bigotry project, a website aimed at educating people about just how harmful the hateful gaming?speech is and asking players to vow not to use that language when playing online. The pledge is as follows:

As a gamer, I realize I contribute to an incredibly diverse social network of gamers around the world, and that my actions have the ability to impact others. In effort to make a positive impact, and to create a community that is welcoming to all, I pledge to not use bigoted language while gaming, online and otherwise.

Bigoted language, the site explains,?includes?slurs based on?race,?ethnicity,?gender,?sexual orientation, and?disability.?In further explaining, Killermann likens the project to a swear jar.

"It?s here to reinforce positive behavior, and hold you accountable for slip-ups," he writes. "I think we can all agree that games would be more fun for folks if various aspects of their identity weren?t tirelessly targeted and attacked, but we can all probably also agree that it?s hard to break a bad habit."

Killermann soft-launched Gamers Against Bigotry? at the beginning of July. And apparently it struck home ... especially with one popular?gaming and Internet?personality. Killermann had?barely got the site up and running when?Wil Wheaton came across it and blogged?about it on Tumblr.
/>

That was good news ... at first. Suddenly Gamers Against Bigotry?had 1,500 pledges.?But with the signatures and the traffic came the trolls and hackers?who began?defacing the site with ugly?words and ugly imagery.

"That's when my routine went?from being excited about how many signatures we had every day?to trying to figure out what the trolls had done every day," he said.

As Killermann tried to step up his security, the hackers?managed to delete the entire pledge?database?and on Sunday?took the site down altogether. Killermann says the hackers went on to take?down his?personal websites too.

But as word about the project's defacement spread across various gaming news sites this week, support for Gamers Against Bigotry grew ... and grew.

"People have been incredibly supportive," Killermann said, explaining that he has been?inundated with supportive messages and offers of help and advice for beefing up security.
/>

While?Gamers Against Bigotry is back up for the time being, Killermann?has discouraged people from adding their names?to the pledge list until he makes the site more secure. And yet?people continue to add their names despite his warning.

"It?s empowering and heartening to see people saying, 'I don?t care if it gets deleted I?m going to sign it any way,'" Killermann admits.

Meanwhile,?Killermann had launched an?Indiegogo fundraising campaign? when he launched Gamers Against Bigotry asking for a mere $700 to help pay for the costs of turning Gamers Against Bigotry into a nonprofit and for?advertising on various game portals. Donations have now?more than doubled that.

As one contributor by the name of?missmarsha1?wrote, "I would not have heard about this had these bullies not launched their cyber-attack ...?I have the feeling this evil act is actually a blessing in disguise for?GAB. For every one horrible person, there are 25 good people. When good people finally start fighting back it ultimately drowns out the noise of the few rotten ones."

Killermann says the project will go on. If people want to help, he asks that they stay tuned and sign the pledge as soon as he can make the site secure. Gamers can also?consider donating to the Indigogo fundraiser as that money will now also be used to secure?the project's website.

When I asked Killermann how he feels about the gaming community after this?roller-coaster experience he said, "I feel really positively about it to be honest.?It's?become clear this is something a lot of people in the gaming community want."

Winda Benedetti writes about video?games for NBCNews.com. You can follow her tweets about games and other things?on Twitter?here?@WindaBenedetti?and you?follow her?on?Google+.?Meanwhile, be sure to check?out the?IN-GAME?FACEBOOK PAGE?to discuss the day's?gaming news and reviews. ?

Mac OS X Mountain Lion is coming tomorrow, July 25

Apple's latest operating system will hit the Mac App Store for $19.99

Apple has finally given its next version of Mac OS X ? Mountain Lion ? a release date and it's real close: tomorrow, July 25, in fact. Company CEO Tim Cook made the announcement during Apple's third quarter earnings report, which also contained some impressive sales numbers: 17 million iPads, 26 million iPhones, and four million Macs were sold in the last three months alone.

Mountain Lion will be available tomorrow from the Mac App Store as a $19.99 download. In fact, that's the only way you'll be able to get it ? Apple has said that it won't be offering USB keys containing the operating system like it did with OS X Lion. In addition, those who bought a new Mac in the last two weeks will be able to download the update for free.

Be sure to check out our extensive coverage of Mountain Lion to make certain that you're all set for the arrival of Apple's latest big cat-themed Mac OS. It's more iOS-like than ever, with features that'll look awfully familiar when iOS 6 hits this fall.

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:27 p.m. ET July 24, 2012

TORONTO (AP) -After striking out in each of his first three at bats, Yoenis Cespedes came to the plate with the bases loaded in the seventh and promptly delivered a big hit.

That's the way things are going right now for the streaking Oakland Athletics.

Cespedes broke open a close game with a three-run single and the Athletics beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-2 Tuesday night for their season-best sixth win in a row.

"We're on a roll," left-hander Travis Blackley said. "We're enjoying the game and we expect to be able to come up big in certain situations and we're doing it over and over again."

Derek Norris hit a two-run homer and Blackley won his third straight decision as the A's improved to 15-2 in July. Oakland (52-44) is eight games over .500 for the first time since July 12, 2008.

"Just winning in itself is contagious," infielder Jemile Weeks said. "Once you get the belief that you can win, it's easier to come about finding that W."

All seven Oakland runs were scored with two outs.

"That's just perseverance, that's just going out there and being clutch," Weeks said.

Travis Snider and J.P. Arencibia each hit solo homers and Brett Lawrie had three hits for the Blue Jays, whose three-game winning streak came to an end.

Blackley (3-2) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings. The left-hander, who has not lost since June 10 at Arizona, walked one and struck out a career-best eight.

"I felt a bit like a fish out of water early, just didn't have a rhythm," Blackley said. "The cutter was disgustingly bad today, it didn't work at all. Luckily the curveball was just phenomenal today. I was able to throw it for strikes and below the zone for swings. That pretty much changed the game for me today because I really didn't hit many spots with any other pitch."

Evan Scribner worked the eighth and Jim Miller gave up Arencibia's 16th homer in the ninth.

Brett Cecil (2-3) allowed two runs and five hits in six innings and has won just once in his past six starts.

"Brett used his changeup, his curveball and his cutter in to right-handers and had a number of batters off-balance," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said.

Cecil has allowed at least one home run in all seven of his starts this season, and 15 of his past 18 overall.

The Athletics put the game away with a five-run outburst in the seventh. Brandon Hicks doubled and Weeks chased reliever Chad Beck with an RBI triple. J.A. Happ came on immediately gave up an RBI double to Coco Crisp, then walked Jonny Gomes.

After a double steal, Josh Reddick walked to load the bases for Cespedes, who had struck out swinging three times. On Happ's 3-2 pitch, Cespedes snapped an 0 for 8 slump by lining a bases-clearing single to center.

Cespedes has at least one hit in 10 of his past 11 games and has 16 RBIs in that span. He's batting .487 (19 for 39) in 10 games since the All-Star break.

"He's a tough kid, he doesn't get down on himself," Athletics manager Bob Melvin said of Cespedes. "I've often said that. He'll get upset with himself and you can see he kind of wears it on his sleeve sometimes but he goes up there with more conviction the next time."

Happ was making his Rogers Centre debut after being acquired in Friday's 10-player trade with Houston but failed to make a good impression on his new fans.

"We were in this game, we were battling and I took us right out of it so it's not a good feeling," Happ said.

Oakland opened the scoring in the second when Brandon Inge reached on a two-out single and Norris hit Cecil's next pitch into the second deck in left, his third homer of the season.

The Blue Jays answered in the third on a leadoff homer by Snider, his second. Snider also connected in Sunday's 15-7 victory at Boston.

NOTES: Oakland has won seven of its past 11 meetings with Toronto, dating to 2011. ... Blue Jays OF Jose Bautista (left wrist) is "making good strides" in his return from the injury, Farrell said, and could be swinging a bat and hitting off the tee soon. ... Toronto RHP Sergio Santos underwent season-ending shoulder surgery Tuesday. ... An MRI on Blue Jays RHP Jason Frasor (forearm) showed no tear, but he has been told not to throw for two weeks. ... Oakland LHP Dallas Braden (shoulder) threw a 33-pitch bullpen session Tuesday and could face live hitters when he throws next. ... Athletics RHP Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) will throw a 45-pitch simulated game at Oakland's spring training facility in Arizona on Wednesday. ... A's LHP Brett Anderson (elbow) will pitch four innings at Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday. ... Reddick threw out Lawrie trying to advance to third in the first, his 10th outfield assist.

1.? Outsourced Call Center Violates Consumer Protection Laws: Bank Liable for $200 Million. Do you have a ?Compliance Management System? to prevent ?unfair deceptive abusive acts and practices? (UDAAP) by your call centers? You might need one now, especially for credit cards, and other consumer financial products.

Businesses that use, manage or deliver call center services (and other ?service providers? to financial institutions such as transaction processors) now have a new roadmap for operational excellence. If they neglect the roadmap, they risk legal enforcement action against unfair trade practices, illegal sales scripts, booking sales to unqualified buyers, deceptive bill collection services and abuses in marketing credit cards and other consumer financial products.? The roadmap was set forth in a Stipulation and Consent Order against Capital One Bank (U.S.A.), N.A. (the ?bank?) in July 2012.? For details, click here.

2.? Humor.

Script, n.? (1) the wording of a planned conversation to guide call center agent?s conversation with a consumer; (2) a tool for unfair deceptive and abusive acts and practices; (3) the path to the consumer?s demand to speak to a call center manager, since the call center agent has no discretion or authority to deviate from the plan.

Compliance Management Program, n.? (1) a program to guide the Compliance Officer and all others to avoid deviant, deceptive or illegal behavior; (2) a cottage industry for managing one?s ?monkey business? through efficiency experts, process designers, software developers, dashboard readers, process monitors, lawyers, accountants, business advisors, internal and external auditors, whistleblowers, regulators and class-action plaintiffs.

Rat muscle + rubbery film = world's first artificial jellyfish

Researchers say they've created a jellyfish that's one part artificial, one part biological. Creation of the 'pseudo organism' could yield new insights into medical research ? or even cleaning up environmental pollution.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff Writer / July 23, 2012

Moon jellyfish are shown in this file photo off the shores of Pompano Beach, Fla. Scientists say the creation of the world's first artificial jellyfish could open new doors for medical and environmental research.

Scientists have created the first artificial jellyfish -- a tiny blend of muscle tissue from a rat and thin, rubbery material from Dow Chemical Corporation -- but with nary a jellyfish gene to its name.

The approaches used to build this "pseudo organism," as the researchers call it, may pave the way for more-effective ways to test new medicines, as well as new ways to repair or replace damaged organs in ways that use a patient's own tissue types -- and no batteries for power, the team suggests.

Beyond the therapeutic lie other potential applications. The researchers say over the long term, their work could help lead to roving, autonomous sentinels that can measure pollution plumes in the ocean and perhaps even clean up the mess -- while drawing nutrients from the ocean itself.

But the development also highlights the blurring line between life as it has evolved on Earth over the past 3.7 billion years and artificial forms that are beginning to emerge from labs, notes Kevin Parker, a physicist at Harvard University's Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering, in Cambridge, Mass.

Initially, biologists identified organisms and their relationships to other organisms by their shapes and the functions various part of an organism performed. More recently, researchers have used genetics to define those relationships.

Here, looks alone suggest "this thing is a jellyfish, and functionally it's a jellyfish," Dr. Parker says. Yet the faux fish's biological material comes from a rat, so genetically, it's a rat."

"Everyone would agree that this is not an organism, although it's alive," he says. In effect, it's a tiny robot whose movements are controlled by living cells.

Some researchers have tried to mimic nature from the ground up, putting novel forms of DNA into DNA-free cells and activating the cells.

In this case, the research team -- led by Dr. Parker and CalTech bioengineer John Dabiri -- reverse-engineered a jellyfish's means of moving in the water. They then put the artificial and biological pieces together in the lab to produce a biomachine with the same shape and motions as its natural counterpart.

The results were published Monday in the journal Nature Biotechnology.

For years, Parker had been researching ways to use biological engineering to provide better ways to help patients diagnosed with heart disease, he says. On various visits to the New England Aquarium in Boston, he was struck by how similar the symmetrical undulations of a moving jellyfish was to the motions of a beating heart, he recalls.

Meanwhile, Dr. Dabiri gave a talk at Harvard on jellyfish propulsion.

Dabiri "was walking down the hall, and I pulled him over and said: 'Hey, man, I think I can build a jellyfish,' " Parker recalls. "He looked at me like I was off my rocker."

But not too far off, apparently, because a collaboration was born.

Stand Firm | ?I'm from the Government, and I'm Here to Help You?

When Moses asked God to be allowed to see Him face-to-face, God told Moses that if He allowed Moses to do so, Moses would perish on the spot. God transformed Himself into a burning bush, so that Moses could look upon Him without dying.

For 24-year-old Tonya Reaves of Chicago, who simply looked on the face of Big, all-caring Government, it was a true tragedy?because she did perish shortly afterward.

Only there were few chroniclers to record her passing. Instead, she merited only this laconic report in most news media:

A woman died of injuries she received during an abortion at a local Planned Parenthood clinic Friday.

Tonya Reaves, 24, of the 1500 block of N. Kildare, was pronounced dead at 11:20 p.m. Friday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner?s office. She was taken to the hospital from the Planned Parenthood clinic at 18 S. Michigan Ave.

An autopsy done Saturday listed the woman?s cause of death to be hemorrhage, with a cervical dilation and evacuation, as well as an intrauterine pregnancy as contributing causes, according to the medical examiner?s office. Her death was ruled an accident.

Calls to local and national Planned Parenthood offices were not returned.?

A little Googling enables us to put more flesh on these bare bones. Tonya Reaves is survived by a twin sister, Toni, who told the British news media (who still know how to dig into a story) that Tonya left behind a one-year-old son, Alvin, and a fianc?, and that the family wants to know how he death could be ruled ?an accident.? From the Daily Mail, where there are pictures of Tonya, and lots more:

The family of Tonya Reaves, 24, is demanding answers after she died suddenly after an abortion at a Chicago Planned Parenthood.

Ms Reaves died Friday night of a hemorrhage, the medical examiner said, with complications from the procedure as well as the pregnancy itself as a contributing factor.

Her death was ruled as an accident, but her twin sister and her family want to know how this tragedy happened.

?It happened so fast. She was just fine one day and then the next day she was gone,? Toni Reaves said of her sister?s passing to CBS.

The procedure which Tonya underwent at the Planned Parenthood (what a misnomer!) clinic is supposed to be standard for a second-trimester pregnancy, but in this case, the outcome was definitely not routine. According to a pro-life news site:

An autopsy conducted Saturday determined that she died from hemorrhage following a Dilation and Evacuation abortion. The D&E abortion method is one employed in pregnancies that have advanced beyond the first trimester. In involves opening the cervix and removing the pre-born baby by dismembering him or her. The Loop Health Center Planned Parenthood advertizes abortions up to 18 weeks.

While the name of the abortionist responsible for this patient death is currently unknown, Planned Parenthood?s most recent 990 tax forms list abortionist Caroline M. Hoke as its medical director.

This incident follows a report published in the Chicago Tribune in June 2011, that exposed the fact that some abortionists did not report complications at all, in violation of the law. At that time, Illinois officials made no attempt to enforce abortion laws in that state.

?Abortion deaths like this are completely avoidable,? said Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue and Pro-Life Nation. ?When a woman bleeds to death after an abortion, it is usually an indication of error on the part of the abortionist coupled with a delay in calling for emergency assistance. Planned Parenthood should be held accountable. Our heartfelt prayers go out to the victim?s family at this time of tragic loss.?

Fot its part, Planned Parenthood was refusing to accept any responsibility, and staying mum on the details, ostensibly because of HIPAA?s privacy requirements. According to the statement PP eventually released to the news media:

We were shocked and saddened upon learning of a tragic development at a nearby hospital. Our hearts go out to the loved ones of this patient.? While legal abortion services in the United States have a very high safety record, a tragedy such as this is devastating to loved ones and we offer our deepest sympathies. Planned Parenthood of Illinois cares deeply about the health and safety of each and every patient. ?We do not publicly discuss private patient matters and we follow HIPAA laws that forbid the disclosure of patient information,? said Planned Parenthood of Illinois CEO Carole Brite.

Notice how, in the first sentence of that statement, Planned Parenthood has managed to shift the site of Tonya?s tragedy from its clinic to ?a nearby hospital.? This is because Planned Parenthood does not want to endanger its primary source of funding, in the face of repeated calls to prevent our taxes from being used to pay for abortions:

The abortion death took place in President Obama?s adopted hometown of Chicago at a time when his administration is working hard to provide funding to Planned Parenthood through the federalized health care system.

?In light of this tragedy, which is yet another in a long list of Planned Parenthood abuses, we call on President Obama to immediately withdraw all federal funding and personal support from Planned Parenthood,? said Newman. ?Friday?s death is yet another reason why men and women of conscience across this nation cannot and will not comply with the forced funding of abortion and its intentional violation of religious liberties.?

So we all pay for abortions without accountability, and Tanya Reeves is the one who ends up really paying?with her life, to say nothing of the horrific death of her dismembered, ripped-apart-in-the-womb, unborn child. But the grisly irony in this tragedy is left to Christian Newswire to uncover:

It is so heartbreaking and tragic that this young woman believed the continuous lies of Planned Parenthood who state that abortions are perfectly safe.

The truth is that abortion is not safe for the women who experience physical and emotional problems for years and years after having an abortion?abortion is not safe for the 4,500 innocent babies that are brutally slaughtered each and every day in America, and abortion is most certainly not safe for the young women who die at the hand of an abortionist.

Incredibly, Planned Parenthood was founded by a racist named Margaret Sanger who made it her life?s work to limit the growth of the black population in America. She felt so strongly about this she initiated the ?Negro Project? in 1939. The objective of the ?project? was to infiltrate the black community by presenting birth control, sterilization and abortion as health options for black women.

To this day, Planned Parenthood?s billion dollars a year, genocidal formula continues to kill women and children?with Black women and children being disproportionately targeted for abortion. This is no accident?it?s just business?a very cruel and bloody business!

To which the only proper reaction is fury?controlled fury, directed at your legislators, who perpetuate this outrage in the expectation it will earn them votes for their re-election in November. Turn them out, I say. Let your contempt for such pandering express itself at the ballot box: it is time to hold all your representatives accountable!

Tonya Reaves believed that Government would get her out of a jam, for free, but paid the ultimate price for that belief. To encourage such a belief is to make those lowest on the economic scale less and less responsible for their actions?those who may be least able to accept responsibility in the first place. (As we found out after some digging, Tonya was unmarried, with a one-year-old son, and was engaged to be married.? However, she was in the second trimester of a new pregnancy, from which she expected the Government to free her. It did just that, of course, but not in the way she expected.)

The inevitable dependency to which Government funding for welfare leads was manifest this past week not just in the individual tragedy of Tonya Reaves and her unborn baby, but also on a much more widespread scale. Consider this next news item, out of Cleveland (H/T: Ace of Spades):

A myth that President Obama is giving people money to pay their bills has prompted thousands of people across the country to try to pay for utilities, phone service and loans using bogus bank routing numbers.

United Way of Cleveland?s 2-1-1 changed its answering machine Monday to say rumors of the Obama program were false after fielding dozens of calls.

Later that day, a United Way employee was on an RTA bus when a rider stood up and announced to fellow passengers that Obama was paying people?s bills. The rider told people they could use the red numbers on the backs of their Social Security cards to tap into the government money. Steve Wertheim of United Way said the woman claimed she had successfully paid her electric bill using the technique.

How credible would you have to be to believe someone who stands up on a bus and announces such a crazy ?fact?? Apparently, the hoax soon turned into an identity scam, which took in tens of thousands of people in New Jersey, Louisiana and elsewhere:

The scam began on the West Coast in May or possibly earlier, and then quickly moved east.

The hook ? cast through phone calls, e-mails and text messages ? was the same. The federal government, in a new stimulus plan, would pay that month?s utility bill. To apply, all a customer needed to do was provide a Social Security number and their own bank routing code.

None of it was true. It was just an identity theft sting aimed at stealing personal information. Plenty of people, though, took the bait.

In Louisiana and Texas, Entergy Corp. reported about 2,000 of its customers were conned. Other power companies that cover Tampa, Fla., the Carolinas, parts of Mississippi and several Midwestern states also reported hundreds more being taken in by the phony offer.

But nowhere in the nation was the scam apparently more effective than in New Jersey.

Read on at the link to learn how many credible citizens there are, who are so dependent on their Government to help them out of a fix that they will grab for any ruse that sounds like something Obama might do for them, and willingly part with their Social Security and bank account numbers, to their ensuing regret.

Are they any the wiser for the experience? Only until the next ?too-good-to-be-true? story comes along to ensnare them. Apparently, the susceptibility to such scams is directly proportionate to people?s ignorance about where the government gets its money:

In the face of stories such as these, it is best to recall the wisdom of another Cleveland?that long-ago, famously skinflint president, Grover Cleveland (who actually vetoed more bills during his first and second terms than any other president before or since):

?If the Government supports the people,? he said in one of his veto messages to Congress, ?who will support the Government??

Sherrod Brown Fundraises Off Wife's Email Exchange With Conservative Blogger

  • Lee Atwater: Smear Pioneer

Negative campaigning has become more effective since 1828, though at times no less brutal. Many attribute this growing efficiency to the legacy of Republican strategist Lee Atwater. The former RNC chairman may have been best known as a driving force behind political ads such as the iconic <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Io9KMSSEZ0Y" target="_hplink">Willie Horton commercial</a> against Michael Dukakis in 1988, but his past involvement in smear campaigns is much deeper. Slate <a href="http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/movies/2008/09/mr_wedge_issue.html" target="_hplink">reports</a> on Atwater's earlier career: <blockquote>In 1973, the 22-year-old prot?g? of South Carolina Sen. Strom Thurmond began his consulting career by publicizing the fact that Tom Turnipseed, a candidate for the state Senate, had undergone shock therapy as a young man: "They hooked him up to jumper cables" became the catchphrase that sunk Turnipseed's candidacy. Five years later, Atwater helped to defeat Max Heller, a Holocaust survivor running for U.S. Congress, by secretly enlisting a third candidate to enter the race and stir up anti-Semitic sentiment. Atwater finagled his way into a minor post in the Reagan administration, but it was as the director of George H.W. Bush's 1988 presidential campaign (and mastermind of the Willie Horton TV ads) that he found his true Machiavellian voice.</blockquote>

  • The Wrong Jim Brady

The potential perils of attack politics were on full display in 1996 when then-GOP Senate candidate Al Salvi attempted to knock down a high-profile endorsement given to his opponent, then-Rep. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), by former Ronald Reagan Press Secretary Jim Brady. Brady "used to sell" machine guns, Salvi alleged, a strong claim considering Brady's position as strong advocate for gun control and victim of a gunshot wound to the head during a failed assassination attempt on President Reagan in 1981. Salvi was wrong. "Turns out that was a different Jim Brady," a blushing Salvi was later <a href="http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1996-11-02/news/9611020079_1_o-malley-event-gun-control-assault-weapons" target="_hplink">forced to admit</a>. "I apologize." Salvi ended up losing to Durbin.

  • Attacking A Triple-Amputee For Lack Of Courage

In 2002, Saxby Chambliss, then a Georgia GOP congressman mounting a bid for U.S. Senate, released a controversial ad <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A58371-2004Sep28.html" target="_hplink">falsely accusing</a> then-Sen. Max Leland (D), a triple-amputee Vietnam War veteran, of voting against the nation's national security interest. It placed Cleland next to images of Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein and suggested that the senator lacked "courage." Chambliss, who didn't serve in Vietnam because of a bad knee, drew widespread condemnation from Republican military veterans in the Senate such as Arizona Sen. John McCain and Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel. In a 2008 interview, Chambliss, who had eventually gone on to defeat Leland six years earlier, <a href="http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2008/11/13/32286/chambliss-cleland-truthful/" target="_hplink">stood by his ad</a> as "truthful in every way."

  • Jean Schmidt Blasts 'Cowards'

Long before Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-Ohio) uttered <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/29/jean-schmidt-reacts-health-care-ruling_n_1638335.html" target="_hplink">shrieks of joy</a> because of false reports that the Supreme Court had ruled against Obamacare, she outraged colleagues on the House floor by suggesting that Vietnam veteran Rep. John Murtha (D-Penn.), was a "coward." In 2005, Schmidt addressed her colleagues in a House speech, <a href="http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2005/11/18/2603/schmidt-shame/" target="_hplink">relaying a message</a> from a Marine who she said had urged her to support an extension of the Iraq War. "He asked me to send Congress a message: Stay the course," she said. "He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message, that cowards cut and run, Marines never do. Danny and the rest of America and the world want the assurance from this body -- that we will see this through." She later returned to the House floor to have her remarks stricken from the record and to apologize to Murtha.

  • RNC's Harold Ford Hit

In 2006, the Republican National Committee set off bickering within and between political parties when it decided to air an ad in a Senate race between then-Rep. Harold Ford Jr. (D-Tenn.) and GOP candidate Bob Corker. The ad was chock-full of stereotypes and thinly-veiled racist undertones -- Ford is black. It drew widespread condemnation from both Democrats and Republicans, including Corker himself. Amid the flareup, RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15403071/ns/politics/t/tennessee-ad-ignites-internal-gop-squabbling/" target="_hplink">said he found nothing wrong</a> with the ad, but attempted to blame the content on a third party group. Corker eventually won the election.

  • Palin's 'Palling Around With Terrorists'

In the heat of the 2008 presidential election, vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin lofted a now-infamous charge, drawing immediate criticism from opponents who saw it as an attempt to brand then-candidate Barack Obama as un-American. Some even alleged that it was a racially charged character attack seeking to subtly link the supposed terrorist ties to prevalent right-wing conspiracy theories about Obama's so-called Muslim roots. The Associated Press <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/05/ap-palins-ayers-attack-ra_n_132008.html" target="_hplink">reports</a> on her comments: <blockquote>"Our opponent ... is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect, imperfect enough, that he's palling around with terrorists who would target their own country," Palin told a group of donors in Englewood, Colo. A deliberate attempt to smear Obama, McCain's ticket-mate echoed the line at three separate events Saturday. "This is not a man who sees America like you and I see America," she said. "We see America as a force of good in this world. We see an America of exceptionalism."</blockquote>

  • 'There Is No God'

In 2008, a floundering Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.) released an ad attempting to accuse her opponent, Democrat Kay Hagan, of having mysterious ties to a group called Godless Americans. The entire ad struck many observers as a <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/29/dole-ad-fabricates-audio_n_138874.html" target="_hplink">desperate attempt</a> to regain momentum, but the brunt of the controversy came in the last few seconds, when a faceless voice rings out, yelling "there is no God." Many saw it as an attempt to paint the quote as Hagan's. It wasn't. In fact, Hagan was a Sunday School teacher who served as an elder at her Presbyterian church.

  • Vintage Michele Bachmann

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) had a somewhat rapid ascent to her current status as darling of conservatives and the Tea Party faithful. It was accelerated in part by appearances such as this one in 2008, during which she called into question the "pro-America" views of the Obamas and various members of Congress. HuffPost's Sam Stein <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/17/gop-rep-channels-mccarthy_n_135735.html" target="_hplink">reported</a> at the time: <blockquote>In a television appearance that outraged Democrats are already describing as Joseph McCarthy politics, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann claimed on Friday that Barack Obama and his wife Michelle held anti-American views and couldn't be trusted in the White House. She even called for the major newspapers of the country to investigate other members of Congress to "find out if they are pro-America or anti-America." Appearing on MSNBC's Hardball, Bachmann went well off the reservation when it comes to leveling political charges against the Democratic nominee. "If we look at the collection of friends that Barack Obama has had in his life," she said, "it calls into question what Barack Obama's true beliefs and values and thoughts are. His attitudes, values, and beliefs with Jeremiah Wright on his view of the United States...is negative; Bill Ayers, his negative view of the United States. We have seen one friend after another call into question his judgment -- but also, what it is that Barack Obama really believes?"</blockquote>

  • 'You Lie'

Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) embodied a newly emerging brand of hyper-partisanship in 2009 when he <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/09/09/gop-rep-wilson-yells-out_n_281480.html" target="_hplink">interrupted</a> President Barack Obama's major speech on his health care reform package. "You lie!" Wilson yelled over Obama, who was explaining that the legislation would not mandate coverage for undocumented immigrants. Wilson's outburst drew disapproval from both sides of the aisle.

  • 'Baby Killer'

During the heat of the health care debate in 2010, Rep. Randy Neugebauer (R-Texas) added to the growing partisan discord when he <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/22/randy-neugebauer-revealed_n_508525.html" target="_hplink">shouted "baby killer"</a> at Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) while he was delivering a speech on the House floor. Stupak, an anti-abortion Democrat, had been under heavy fire from Republicans after crafting a deal with the White House in return for his and other Democrats' "yes" vote on the health care reform bill. The White House held up their end of the bargain with an executive order affirming that no taxpayer money would go to fund abortions.

  • 'No Mosque'

North Carolina GOP congressional candidate Renne Ellmers <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/09/23/renee-ellmers-gop-congres_n_735585.html" target="_hplink">raised some eyebrows</a> and gave her race national attention when she released an attack ad attempting to link her Democratic challenger to the controversial Park51 Islamic center. The ad was criticized for its apparent interchangeable use of the words "terrorists" and "Muslims," as well as the fact that Ellmers' opponent, incumbent Rep. Bob Etheridge (D) hadn't even weighed in on the issue yet. Ellmers didn't appear to do herself any favors in her <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/09/27/renee-ellmers-north-carol_n_740199.html" target="_hplink">attempts to explain the ad</a> during a contentious interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper, but she ended up winning in November after a late surge of momentum.

  • Alan Grayson's 'Taliban Dan'

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) managed to give his opponent, Republican Dan Webster, a boost after he released an attack ad seeking to label Webster as "Taliban Dan." The spot featured selectively edited quotes from a 2009 Christian seminar that <a href="http://www.politifact.com/florida/article/2010/sep/28/fact-checking-alan-graysons-taliban-dan-webster-ad/" target="_hplink">misrepresented Webster's words</a> to suggest that he believed wives should submit to their husbands. Grayson had repeatedly enraged his Republican opponents with biting and at times over-the-top allegations. Comments such as his notorious charge that their health care plan was for Americans to "die quickly" had made him a top target for the GOP. He would lose his election to Webster.

  • Scott Brown Pictures Stripped Elizabeth Warren

Sen. Scott Brown (D-Mass.) did himself no favors in the fall of 2011, when he returned a volley concerning his past nude modeling for <em>Cosmopolitan</em> magazine, a career choice that his Democratic opponent Elizabeth Warren had earlier jabbed at. HuffPost's Ryan Grim <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/06/scott-brown-elizabeth-warren-senate_n_998048.html" target="_hplink">reported</a>: <blockquote>"Have you officially responded to Elizabeth Warren's comment about how she didn't take her clothes off?" the host asked Brown Wednesday. "Thank God!" Brown said, laughing. The host got a kick out it, too. "That's what I said! I said, 'Look, can you blame a good-looking guy for wanting to, you know..."</blockquote> His opponents quickly <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2011/oct/06/news/la-pn-scott-brown-thank-god-20111006" target="_hplink">hit back</a>, claiming that the comments were sexist and "the kind of thing you would expect to hear in a frat house, not a race for U.S. Senate."

  • 'Debbie Spend It Now'

Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.) couldn't have picked a bigger stage to launch a now-notoriously insensitive ad against his Democratic opponent, incumbent Sen. Debbie Stabenow. In the middle of the Super Bowl, Hoekstra's campaign <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/06/pete-hoekstra-ad-china_n_1256791.html" target="_hplink">rolled out the spot</a>, which featured an Asian-American actress using stereotypically broken English to accuse Stabenow -- or "Spend-It-Now" -- of supporting U.S. government spending habits that benefitted the Chinese economy. The backlash was <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/06/pete-hoekstra-ad-china-michigan_n_1256912.html" target="_hplink">bipartisan</a> and <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/22/pete-hoekstra-polls-china-ad_n_1294221.html" target="_hplink">widespread</a>.

  • Allen West

Though only a freshman, Tea Party favorite Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) has already staked his political fame on inflammatory and controversial statements. His most well-known claim is now perhaps his contention that as many as 80 House Democrats are members of the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/11/allen-west-democrats-communist-party_n_1417279.html" target="_hplink">Communist Party</a>. His spokesperson later claimed that he was referring to members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Of course, that's just one of a catalogue of Allen West-isms. • 'True Hero' Battle

Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) began digging himself a hole in July when he <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/03/joe-walsh-tammy-duckworth_n_1646793.html" target="_hplink">suggested</a> that his Democratic opponent, triple-amputee Iraq War veteran Tammy Duckworth, was not a "true hero" because she spoke too frequently about her military service. In the followup, Walsh kept digging deeper on the Duckworth line, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/05/joe-walsh-tammy-duckworth_n_1650805.html" target="_hplink">claiming</a> that "all she does" is "talk about her service," instead of focusing on other issues. He <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/05/joe-walsh-ashleigh-banfield_n_1652236.html" target="_hplink">took a similar angle</a> in a subsequent interview, in which he managed to utter his interviewer's name more than 90 times.
