Technologies influence on communication draft | Daniel Spain's Blog

Technology is at the forefront on human innovation.? Every day new devices are released and old ones are improved to allow for higher quality and less restricted communication.? Consequently these devices are changing the way we communicate.? Technological developments have changed the way we connect to others and we have adapted the rules of communication to work with these changes.

Technology allows us to stay connected to everyone we know, everyone we don?t know, and from wherever we are.? Geographical barriers are no longer an obstacle.? From text messages, instant messages, and social networking sites, we are capable of knowing what many people are doing at anytime of the day from anywhere in the world.? The social networking site, Facebook has acquired a whopping 901 million users in which 526 million use the site on a daily bases.? These users are estimated to spend over 740 billion minutes per month on Facebook.? These numbers lead us to the question of, how is technology changing the way people communicate with each other?

Investment issues?

A study conducted on Facebook?s impact on interpersonal friendships of female college students reveals that social networking sites are changing the core features of satisfying personal relationships. ?In?Interpersonal Communication: Everyday Encounters, Dr. Julia Wood list some of the core features of a satisfying personal relationship as investment, commitment, and trust.? Wood defines investment as what we put into the relationship that we could not receive if the relationship ended.? This includes time, energy, thoughts, feelings, etc.? Wood then defines commitment as the decision to stay within the relationship and notes that it is a decision and not a feeling.? Finally, Wood explains trust as the faith in another?s care about the relationship and your well-being.? In the study on Facebook?s impact on interpersonal friendships of female college students, students surveyed admitted that while they do use Facebook on a daily bases for interpersonal communication they did not feel comfortable talking about everything on the social networking site.? So while Facebook does allow users to stay committed within a relationship and become closer because there are no geographical boundaries, relationships are not as deep due to a lack of investment.

In a relationship with?

Relationship statuses are one of the many features on Facebook.? Users can pick from a variety of different relationship statuses including single, married, it?s complicated and others.? By doing this Facebook is touching on aspects of our romantic relationships.? Dr. Julia Wood defines a committed romantic relationship as relationships between people who assume they will be continuing parts of each other?s lives.? She notes that committed love is voluntary, involves I-thou communication, includes sexual and romantic feelings, and is considered primary and permanent.? The ?in a relationship? status on Facebook may seem like a silly thing to consider in terms of a romantic relationship but the emphasis some couples put on the status may surprise you.? In an article on the true meaning of Facebook?s ?in a relationship? status it emphasizes the importance on commitment and hints at the possibility of fights emerging related to ?jealousy, commitment and power?. The acceptance and use of a relationship status among both parties in a relationship provides a sense of commitment and acceptance to each other and the public.? It allows members of a relationship to feel primary and continuing parts of each other?s lives.

An online friend

Facebook is but one way technology is influencing communication.? Instant messaging is also a very popular tool used by many for open conversations over the internet.? Instant messaging allows two people to communicate from anywhere in the world via a computer, tablet, or even a cell phone.? It gives us the possibility to form friendships with people in which we otherwise would have never met.? But how good of friends can you become through instant messaging?

Dr. Julia Wood explains that friendship involves a willingness to invest, a sense of emotional closeness, acceptance, trust, and support.? Friendships are built on personal investments of time, effort, and thought that are limited over the internet and through instant messaging.? While we can communicate with people from anywhere we can only become so close.? Wood admits that friends want to feel emotionally close to one another and this is done in two ways, emotional closeness through dialogue, and emotional closeness through doing. Wood defines emotional closeness through dialogue as part of the feminine speech community, putting an emphasis on talking as a primary way of building bonds between friends.? Wood defines closeness through doing as part of the masculine speech community, putting an emphasis on sharing activities and doing things for each other to build strong bonds between friends.

Limitations

Instant messaging focuses on building emotional closeness through dialogue.? In a study on adolesenses developing friendships online via instant messagers it was noted that many teenagers felt there was less risk in communicating through IM?s than face-to-face interaction and felt they had more control over what they say during online conversations.? This may be true for many of you as well.? IM?s give us a chance to read our responses before we send them out, lowering a chance of miscommunication.? The problem of IM?s is that it is limited solely to building closeness through dialogue.? We are also limited to what we share with others through IM?s.? In the study mentioned before on interpersonal friendship of female college students, students?admitted that they don?t feel comfortable sharing all their information on the internet.

In conclusion?.
